February 12, 2015

Jonathan H. Adler portrait

Jonathan H. Adler, the inaugural Johan Verheij Memorial Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Business Law and Regulation at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, will deliver a talk titled "Conservative Conservation: Property Rights and Environmental Protection" on Thursday, March 26, at noon, in the McQuade Law Auditorium at The University of Toledo College of Law.

The free, public lecture is a presentation in the College’s Stranahan National Issues Forum and is sponsored by the College of Law and its chapter of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies.

During his talk, Professor Adler will challenge the premises upon which conventional approaches to environmental protection are based. He will argue that greater concern for property rights can provide the foundation for environmental protection that is more effective and equitable.

"Today, the dominant perspective on how to protect the environment is to employ government regulation—especially from the federal government,” said Lee Strang, professor of law at the College of Law. “This approach is reflected in federal legislation and is unquestioned by most scholars. In his Stranahan Lecture, Professor Adler will challenge this narrative. In place of the heavy hand of the EPA, Professor Adler will argue that the free market and private property rights are the best way to protect the environment.”

Adler is the author or editor of five books and more than a dozen book chapters. His articles have appeared in the most influential legal and popular publications in the nation ranging from the Harvard Environmental Law Review and Supreme Court Economic Review, to The Wall Street Journal and USA Today. Adler is a contributing editor to National Review Online and a regular contributor to the popular legal blog, "The Volokh Conspiracy," hosted by washingtonpost.com. A regular commentator on constitutional and regulatory issues, he has appeared on numerous radio and television programs, ranging from PBS "Newshour with Jim Lehrer" and NPR's "Talk of the Nation," to Fox News Channel's "O'Reilly Factor" and "Entertainment Tonight." He has testified before Congress a dozen times and his work has been cited in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Adler holds a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from George Mason University School of Law.

The Stranahan National Issues Forum is a joint program of The University of Toledo College of Law and its chapter of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies. It is made possible by an endowment from the Stranahan Foundation. The Forum’s purpose is to address issues of national importance through the lens of the American legal system, and Professor Adler joins a long list of high-profile speakers who have delivered the Stranahan Lecture at Toledo Law.

Reserved parking for lecture attendees is available in Lot 25, which is adjacent to Rocket Hall. Visitors may access Lot 25 from Secor Road using College Drive. Food and drink will be provided.
