Dean Barros recognized among top property law professors

December 30, 2015

Dean BarrosA recent ranking by the PropertyProf Blog listed Dean D. Benjamin Barros as one of 15 top property law professors under the age of 50.

Dean Barros appeared on a list titled “Most Cited Property Scholars Under 50, 2011-2015” with colleagues from Chicago, Fordham, Cornell, and Duke law schools, among others.

Dean Barros joined the College of Law as dean in July 2015. He teaches and writes in the areas of property law and theory, regulatory takings, property law reform, and the philosophy of science. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Law, Property, and Society, and in 2015, he released a casebook on property law with Aspen/Wolters Kluwer. Dean Barros was one of the youngest educators to serve on the executive committee of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) and has served as chair of the AALS Property Section as well as president of the Association for Law, Property, and Society.

“As a faculty, we were pleased when we recruited Ben Barros to be our dean,” said Eric Chaffee, associate dean for faculty research and development. “He is both an outstanding leader and an outstanding scholar. He fits well with Toledo’s tradition of being a community of scholars.”

Previously the associate dean of academic affairs and professor of law at Widener University School of Law in Harrisburg, Pa., Dean Barros practiced as a litigator before teaching. Immediately after graduating from law school, Barros clerked for Judge Milton Pollack of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He then worked at the law firms of Latham & Watkins LLP and Debevoise & Plimpton, both in New York City.

The Toledo Law faculty continues to be recognized for its scholarly excellence. A spring 2015 study ranked Toledo Law 62nd of the nation’s 205 law schools, as measured by citations to faculty articles, in a study on faculty productivity. This is the second major study to highlight the prominence of Toledo Law faculty scholarship in recent years. In a study conducted by Roger Williams University in 2013, Toledo Law’s faculty ranked 90th in the country and 4th among Ohio law schools as measured by placements in top law reviews.
