Speyer ’85 Receives 2016 Distinguished Alumna Award from Toledo Law

October 27, 2016

Sharon Speyer ’85 received the Distinguished Alumna Award from The University of Toledo College of Law at The University of Toledo’s Homecoming Gala on Friday, Oct. 15, 2016.  The award was presented by Dean D. Benjamin Barros following a video presentation highlighting a number of her personal and career milestones.

Speyer currently serves as President of the Northwest Ohio Region for Huntington Bank.  She began working for Huntington Bank’s predecessors in 1992 and assumed her current role in 2007 after serving as President of the Northwest Ohio Region and general counsel for Sky Bank before the bank merged with Huntington in September 2007.

A member of The University of Toledo’s Board of Trustees since 2009, Speyer currently serves as the Board’s Chair.  She is also active in the local community, serving as part of the Regional Growth Partnership Board, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority Board, and the Toledo Symphony Board of Trustees, among other community leadership roles.

Before graduating from The University of Toledo College of Law in 1985 with her juris doctor degree, Speyer earned her bachelor’s degree in international studies at The Ohio State University.  While a law student, she participated in Moot Court and clerked for Judge Alice Resnick and for the law firm of Cooper, Straub, Walinski and Cramer.  Speyer has remained closely connected to the law school in the years since her graduation.  After earning her JD, she assisted the Law Admissions Office with recruiting.  More recently, she served as a panelist during a professional development session for law students that focused on business etiquette in the boardroom.

Speyer will share reflections on her legal education and career in the forthcoming edition of the Transcript, Toledo Law’s alumni magazine, which is due out later this fall.
