Historical/Biographical Sketch

The Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition was founded in 2001 by Steve Miller. It is an organization dedicated to building a nonviolent movement for peace, social justice, and environmental responsibility by organizing marches and demonstrations. One notable display included covering the lawn of the Centennial Mall at the University of Toledo in faux headstones to represent the deaths of American soldiers to date due to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have also picketed government buildings on multiple occasions, held screenings of anti-war documentaries, and organized marches.

There are seven points of unity outlined on their website:

“We mourn the victims and condemn the attacks of September 11.
We stand in defense of civil liberties.
We oppose anti-Arab, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and all forms of racial, ethnic, and religious violence and bigotry.
Justice not vengeance: bring the perpetrators to justice through established principles of international law.
We oppose militarism and war.
We seek global peace through social and economic justice.
Statement for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.”

The Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition is still active in organizing demonstrations in protest of current issues such as the war in Afghanistan.

More information can be found on their website as well as their active Facebook group ‘Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition.’

Scope and Content Note

This collection would be of interest to researchers studying the responses to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan in the Toledo area. Many newspaper clippings include a recurring demonstration on the Centennial Mall at the University of Toledo with headstones made of cardboard or other materials to show the number of deaths in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. There are multiple flyers advertising events such as documentary screenings and demonstrations that spread the anti-war sentiment. Included in the collection are also many documents with the chants, slogans, and poems the group used as well as photographs of the demonstrations and marches. This collection includes materials from 1972 to 2013 and is organized alphabetically.
