Historical Sketch

Libbey-Owens-Ford was a long-standing Toledo glass company whose innovations with glass products, like laminate glass for car windshields, improved the lives of millions. Please see the finding aid for MSS-066, the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company Records, for a full timeline of the company’s history.

In 1938, Libbey Owens Ford constructed a Technical Center for research and development at 1701 East Broadway Avenue, Toledo. Additions were made to the building in 1941, 1946, and 1958 (the Engineering Wing). The building was closed in 2000 by LOF’s parent company Pilkington for financial reasons, and in 2003, the site was sold to Toledo Public Schools for expansions of their school facilities.

Siegfried Herliczek, PhD, was a former employee of the LOF Technical Center and also has experience in research and development for Union Carbide Corporation and LOF’s parent company, Pilkington Glass. He has received 15 glass-related patents during his career and is now a glass consultant for Glassig Inc. He earned his BS from the University of Massachusetts and a PhD. in Chemistry from Northeastern University.

Scope and Content Note

Researchers interested in the history of Libbey-Owens-Ford as well as the development of safety glass in general could make good use of this collection, which primarily contains research materials and reports from the LOF Technical Center, focusing on laminate safety glass vs. temperate safety glass. Temperate safety glass was used regularly until LOF developed sheets of laminate safety glass, and reports in the collection reflect testing and development of these products. Some laminate safety glass reports are published by external companies such as DuPont, Monsanto, and Sekisu, while others address safety codes and legislation affecting the industry,

The collection also holds a variety of publications, articles, and advertisements on LOF laminate safety glass, as well as a variety of correspondence, manuals, presentations, and proposals on its proper manufacture and usage.

There is also a small series on LOF and glass history, including the New World of Glass publication and an Oral History Project, both specific to the history of Libbey-Owens-Ford.

This collection is divided into seven series; Advertisements, Articles, Correspondence, Glass Design Manuals and Presentations, History, Reports, and Safety Codes and Standards. A more detailed description of each series follows.
