Biographical Sketch

Lloyd Sunderman began his career as a musician when he received a Bachelor of Music degree from McPhail School of Music in Minneapolis and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Union College.  He went on to obtain his M.A. in Music from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota.
Teaching music became a career for Dr. Sunderman.  After receiving his Ph.D., he spent two years teaching in public schools.  He was head of vocal and public school music at Hardin and Western Union Colleges, and then an instructor at the University of Minnesota.  He served two years as head of the music department at Eastern Illinois State Teachers College, and was director of music for ten years at the State Normal School, Oswego, N.Y.  He was also director of the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music in Indianapolis.  In 1950, he joined the music faculty at the University of Toledo, where he became the director of Rocket Choristers and chairmen of the Department of Music.

The research he did as a part of his profession led to many publications and books.  Some of his books include School Music Teaching – Its Theory and Practice, Techniques for Choral Success, The Primary Choir: Its Organization and Development, Organization of the Church Choir, and Historical Foundations of Music Education in the United States, which utilizes over 20,000 references.

Dr. Sunderman was involved in many activities.  He served as chairman of the Music Committee for Toledo Council of Churches, vice president of New York State School Music Association, and president of Oswego Civic Music Association.  He was also a member of Directory of American Scholars, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Kappa Phi, Ohio Music Teachers’ Association, Music Teachers’ National Association, and much more.

Dr. Sunderman had a very successful career with over 2,000 solo concerts.  One of the highlights of his career was a performance by the Rocket Choristers on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1950.  He finished his career at the University of Toledo, and passed away in January 1983.
