Historical/Biographical Sketch

Melvin C. Wren was a professor in the University of Toledo’s History Department from 1967 to 1977. He received his BA in 1936, his MA in 1938, and his Ph.D. in 1939 all from the University of Iowa. He then spent 1940 to 1967 as an instructor at the University of Montana. While at the University of Montana, Wren also taught as an instructor at the American University from 1941-1942 and as a lecturer in Maryland from 1962 to 1963.
           

In 1967, he began his career as a professor of history at the University of Toledo. Wren taught courses on Russian History as well as Western Civilization. During his time at UT, he wrote a few books on Russian history such as The Western Impact on Tsarist Russia and The Course of Russian History. Dr. Melvin C. Wren died on April 25th, 1984 at the age of 73.


Scope and Content Note

Collection consists of notebooks and several versions of six manuscripts by Melvin C. Wren, Professor of History at Toledo University from 1967-1977. The manuscripts are: “The Western Impact on Tsarist Russia”, “The Course of Russian History”, “Early Russia”, “London and the Twenty Ships”, “The Chamber of the City of London 1633-1642” and “Deposit Banking in London in 1640”.
