Historical/Biographical Sketch

The University of Toledo is a public research university in Toledo Ohio. It was founded in 1872 as the Toledo University of Arts and Trades located in downtown Toledo by Jesup Wakeman Scott. After closing for six years, it was eventually turned over to the city in 1884 and reopened as the Toledo Manual Training School. The university continued to develop throughout the late 1800s.

In 1914, the University came to be known as Toledo University. It was not until 1959 that the name changed again to The University of Toledo. The university moved to its current location in the Ottawa neighborhood in 1931. Overall, the campus’ combined area is about 1,400 acres and over 100 major buildings. In addition to main campus, the university also includes a Health Science Campus in which the merged Medical University of Ohio can be found.
