Historical/Biographical Sketch

In the late 1960s, The University of Toledo began to plan for its centennial celebration. In 1968, the Faculty Senate organized a committee to foster cooperation by the faculty in planning a centennial year. Several administrators were added to the committee to facilitate university-wide planning. The committee’s brief final report recommended seven possible activities, including a general theme and slogan; a series of conferences aimed at producing a learned publication; a series of events to generate publicity; a fund raising campaign; a published history; the acquisition of official university regalia; and dramatic and musical presentations. Most of these recommendations were ultimately implemented.

In 1972, President Carlson appointed a steering committee and larger general committee to carry out the centennial events. Dr. Harold Oyser, Vice President for development, chaired the steering committee. Most of the events took place between 1972 and 1973. The Centennial Fund Drive, a major capital campaign, continued on for several years and resulted in the construction of Centennial Hall (now Savage Hall) and Centennial Mall.
