Biographical/Historical Sketch

The Delta XI Alumnae are part of the XI Delta chapter of the Chi Omega fraternity, established in 1895 at the University of Arkansas.  The alumnae chapter represents the University of Toledo alumnae who were members of the organization.  One member was Almeda May Janney, professor of history at UT who specialized in the British Empire, modern Europe, and the Orient.  Janney was born in Lambertville, Michigan in 1887.  After she received her A.B. at the University of Michigan she joined the UT faculty in 1922.  She became a member the League of Women Voters in 1933, and later president, and the XI Delta chapter in 1944, as well as being involved in many other organizations.  She was well-loved and respected by her community and peers.

Janney passed away in October of 1967.

Scope and Content Note

The Chi Omega Xi Delta Collection primarily concerns the planning by the organization of a recognition dinner for Almeda May Janney, professor of history at the University of Toledo. Materials include a scrapbook and clippings and correspondence concerning Janney. Additionally, the collection contains a scrapbook outlining the fraternity and various activities.
