Historical/Biographical Sketch

Edward J. Nussel was born on April 4th, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Detroit in 1953, Nussel briefly enlisted in the US Army. He served from 1956 to 1958. Immediately after the army, Nussel continued school and earned his Master’s Degree in 1958 and his Doctorate in 1964, both from Wayne State University and both in education. During his time in school and his time in the army, Nussel also worked as a school teacher in Detroit Public School from 1953 to 1964.

In 1964, Nussel joined the University of Toledo as an assistant professor. Soon he was appointed associate dean for the College of Education while also teaching education theory and social foundations. Nussel was very active at the university. He was the chairman of the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Conference Committee and also served on the Fiscal Resources and Planning Board. For a brief time, he was president of UT’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors, but he remained an executive committee member afterwards. He also active outside of the University of Toledo and served as the president of the School Board of Catholic Diocese of Toledo and the chairman of Lourdes College Board of Trustees.

Nussel wrote “An Introduction to the Foundations of Education” in 1968 in addition to over 30 academic articles for various journals. He also held memberships in Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. Edward Nussel married Lorrain Varana; together they have three sons and two grandchildren.


Scope and Content Note

Collection contains the papers of Edward J. Nussel, professor emeritus of education. Papers document Nussel’s personal research interests, programs of the College of Education and Allied Profesiona, and administration of the associate dean’s office. Folders are arranged alphabetically by subject.
