Historical/Biographical Sketch

George E. Pankratz was born in 1919 in the Lucas County area. He attended Scott High School, received a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Toledo in 1936, and a Master’s of Science in Engineering Degree from the University of Michigan in 1950. He joined the UT faculty in 1946 after serving in the US army during World War II.

Mr. Pankratz was a mechanical engineer who taught at UT for 35 years. He was a chairman of the Engineering Graphics Department beginning in 1959. Mr. Pankratz was appointed to full professor in 1971.

He was selected as one of four outstanding teachers at UT in 1967 and in 1980 he was selected by the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers as the Outstanding Educator in Ohio. For many years, he was chief marshal and nomenclator at the university’s commencement ceremonies in which he led the academic procession and also called off the names of all graduates.

Mr. Pankratz was adviser and treasurer of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, and was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Mu Epsilon honorary societies. He was adviser to the Triangle Engineering Fraternity and the past president of the Ohio Society for Engineering Graphics. In addition, he was a member of the American Society for Engineering Educators and the American Society for Mechanical Engineers.


Scope and Content Note

The papers of George Pankratz reflect primarily his professional and educational activities during his service as assistant professor from 1946-1951, associate professor from 1951-1971, and as professor of Engineering from 1971-1981 at the University of Toledo. His files also contain items dating back to 1920 prior to his arrival at UT. The bulk of the materials generated between 1946-1978 with occasional gaps in the series.

The collection is divided into 7 series as follows: “Class Materials”, “Personal”, “College of Engineering”, “University Activities”, “Tau Beta Pi”, “Drawings”, and “Artifacts”. The collection is arranged by the series listed alphabetically therein.


Series List

Class Materials
Consists of course outlines, curriculum planning, class rosters, student drawings, and worksheets. These records offer valuable insight into the faculty teaching techniques of the engineering college.

Personal

 

Contains personal information and activities outside of the University.

S3

College of Engineering

 

Outlines Pankratz involvement in college operations; subjects documented include accreditation, college committees, evaluations policy, and student awards. Also includes correspondence and printed materials depicting his involvement in American Society of Mechanical Engineers (A.S.M.E.), American Society for Engineering Education (A.S.E.E.), National Society of Professional Engineers (N.S.P.E.), Ohio Association for Engineering Graphics (N.S.P.E.), and Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (O.S.P.E.). And professional publications written himself are lacking in this collection.

University Activities

 

Contained is evidence of Pankratz’s involvement and active participation in university affairs. Also, evidence of his long time service as chief marshal for commencement ceremonies as well as records of involvement in organizations and committees such as the Collective Bargaining Committee, University Club, Phi Kappa Phi, and the Athletic Board of Control.

Included are pledge essays, the constitution, and various publications and correspondence covering the years 1932-1979.

Drawings

 

Consists of reprints and trade literature indicating Pankratz’s interest in planning and programing and illustrative of technical developments in the field of Engineering Graphics. Contains floor plans of University Hall and the Engineering-Science Building as well as several miscellaneous blueprints and classroom drawings.

Artifacts

 

Contains prints that outline both Pankrat’s professional and personal interests.
