Historical/Biographical Sketch

Arthur R. Steele was born in Oakland, California on October 28th, 1916. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Berkley in 1937, an M.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1950, and a doctorate of philosophy in 1957 from Duke University. A specialist in Latin American History, Dr. Steele visited Peru and Chile in 1951-52 on a research fellowship and has also traveled in Spain, Mexico, and most of the countries in South America. His travels resulted in the book Flowers for the King: The Expedition of Ruiz and Pavon and the Flora of Peru, published in 1964.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Toledo, Dr. Steele served as the assistant professor of History at the State College of New York at Buffalo. In 1957, Dr. Steele came to UT, earning full professorship in 1964. At the University of Toledo he served as the first director of the honors program from 1963-1965. He was also the chairman of the UT Academic Grievance Committee, secretary of UT Publications Committee, and a member of the University Library Advisory Committee. He worked at the University until 1978. Arthur Robert Steele died on March 23rd, 2011 at the age of 94.

This collection primarily documents Dr. Steele’s published work, Flowers for the King. Personal and professional correspondence, ads, reviews, and photographs are among the material regarding the book. Other correspondence from the 1950s to the 1980s as well as information pertaining to Dr. Steele’s academic career, such as news articles and book reviews can be found in the collection.
