Historical Sketch

The Toledo Campus Ministry (TCM) was created in 1967 as a semi-autonomous department of the Toledo Area Council later known as Metro Toledo Churches United. The goals were: to be a presence of the church in the University setting, to be a representative of the conscience of the church in the community, to focus on continuing TCM’s ministry with and for ethnic minorities, to focus on issues that related to persons and groups in and around the University, to care for administration, and the enabling of the ministry. Glenn Hosman became the director of TCM in 1977. During his time there there were three main emphases for which he secured foundation grants: an educational and advocacy program on the problems of world hunger, a special faculty lecture series on peace, and a four year commitment for an emphasis on Blacks in Higher Education.

motive magazine was the official magazine for the Methodist Student Movement, which was founded in 1946.  Time magazine said in 1966 that it stood out among church publications “like a miniskirt at a church social”. The magazine’s strong stand on civil rights, Vietnam, and emerging gender issues became too much for the Methodist Church so publications were ceased in 1972. (“Motive Magazine”)

The Toledo Campus Ministry is still active today primarily with the opening of the food kitchen on campus and assisting with Books for Africa which provides educational texts and library books to children and adults in 45 African countries.
