Historical/Biographical Sketch

Elmer Richard Gregory was born in Baytown Texas. He studied at the University of Texas, receiving a bachelor’s degree with honors. Then, he earned his master’s degree from Rice University. He earned his Doctorate in Comparative Literature from the University of Oregon before coming to the University of Toledo in 1967. Dr. Gregory taught multiple topics pertaining to English Literature.


While at UT, Dr. Gregory published a book titled Milton and the Muses which became well known to Milton scholars. He also made numerous contributions to the Milton Encyclopedia. After retiring in 1998, Dr. Gregory continued writing articles and poetry. E. Richard Gregory died on October 11, 2009 at the age of 71.


Scope and Content Note

Collection contains numerous writings of Dr. E. Richard Gregory, professor of English at the University of Toledo. Also included are criticisms of his works along with edits made by him. Of note is an inscribed copy of Gregory’s work Milton and the Muses.
