Planning Your Visit: The Basics
Thank you for visiting the Ward M. Canaday Center for Special Collections! Please take note of the following when planning your visit:
- The Canaday Center is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the Center closing during the lunch period of 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
- Access to our collections is currently by appointment only. Scheduling an appointment allows:
- You to discuss your research needs with one of our staff members, allowing us to determine if the materials we house will meet those needs and ensuring that you will have a fruitful visit.
- Us to retrieve the materials ahead of your visit, saving you more time for research.
- Us to fulfill requests for 10 boxes or more, which may not be possible without advanced notice.
- Us to arrange to retrieve any of the Center's materials that are housed off campus at the Northwest Ohio Regional Book Depository in Perrysburg, Ohio.
- Us to ensure the Reading Room is not full, such as when classes visit.

- The final appointment of the day is at 4 p.m. and staff will stop retrieving material at 4:15.
- The Canaday Center is located on the fifth floor of the William S. Carlson Library in the middle of the University of Toledo's main campus. Recommended parking includes surface lots 10 and 13 and require the purchase of a guest pass. Lot 11, near Snyder Memorial, offers metered, pay and display parking. - Guest parking passes are $5/day and can be purchased by clicking here. They are the equivalent of a C permit.
- When you enter the Library, you will pass the Circulation Desk on your right as you head straight toward the elevators. Take an elevator to the fifth floor and turn left towards a set of doors that leads to the Art Gallery/Quiet Study area. The Canaday Center is to your left. Enter the exhibit area and follow the signs to the Reading Room where you will be greeted by one of our friendly staff members.
