Carlson Library Maps Department

The Map Collection is a research collection of sheet maps, globes, and atlases.  These maps are for reference use, and therefore materials do not circulate. However, exceptions may be made for items to be used briefly in the classroom or for projects of short duration For more information, contact the Map Librarian.

Location

The Map collection is located on the east side of the third floor of Carlson Library.

Arrangement

Maps are arranged by Library of Congress classification numbers.  Please use this plan of the department to locate specific types or series of maps:

Much of the collection consists of topographic maps (showing contours and elevation) from the United States Geological Survey. These are arranged in drawers by call numbers that group states by geographic region, with the maps filed alphabetically by quadrangle name.  An index is included in each drawer.
Separate areas hold oversize maps, USGS Investigation Series maps, and weather maps.  Gazetteers and reference atlases are shelved near the Map Librarian's desk near the back of the collection.

Atlases are shelved near the pillars and along the east wall.

Finding

See the How do I Find Maps page for more information about finding maps in the UT Library Catalog, through the Research Databases, and on the Internet.  Some of the materials in the Map Collection are not included in the UT Library Catalog, so there is a separate card catalog for these items near the Map Librarian's desk.
