Giving to the University Libraries
While no one has ever graduated from our University of Toledo Libraries, one thing is for certain, no one has ever graduated from the University of Toledo without the help of our Libraries. The University Libraries and Academic Support at the University of Toledo is the heart and soul of campus. We are committed to the life of the mind and are looking for people to help us in our mission. Giving to University Libraries touches all students and helps us prepare them to be lifelong learners. We pride ourselves on being student-centered with learning as our highest priority.
We are seeking to raise funds to support four basic initiatives:
- Improvement of the on-going technology needs of the new Information Commons in the Carlson Library.
- Digitization and online cataloging of the Libraries’ special collections.
- Expansion of our special collection holdings in the Canaday Center.
- Sponsorship of intellectually stimulating programs designed to provoke discussion and learning.
It takes a great deal of financial support to help us meet out strategic initiatives. Computers and the Internet have dramatically transformed the way libraries service our patrons and it is our desire to make the changes necessary to become the Library of the 21st Century.

Why Give to the Libraries?
It is our primary responsibility to justify and secure the necessary funding to acquire collections, make them accessible to those who need them, and to provide a wide range of library services to a diverse clientele. As state funding for Universities continues to remain at uncertain levels, it is imperative for us to look at raising external funds, both in gifts and in grants. We are seeking private money to assist us in funding a number of collections and projects that might otherwise not be able to happen. Your gifts will be used to create a legacy treasured by generations of students, faculty, staff and other scholars.
The University Libraries will consider donations of books, media and other resources. All donations must be pre-approved. If your donation is approved, then donors assume the responsibility of transporting items to the Library. Substantial gifts can be reviewed on site. Donated items become the property of the University Libraries. We will send a confirmation letter documenting your donation, but cannot appraise the value of donated items for tax purposes. Please consult the Internal Revenue Service online documentation Determining the Value of Donated Property (Publication 561).

Other Giving: Endowments
Our main goal is to help you plan your gift in the way which best meets your needs. We encourage you to determine the best way for your gift to be used and will work with you and your financial advisor every step of the way.
One of our main priorities is to grow and enhance our general endowment funds. These funds can make the difference between covering expenses and being able to really innovate. By creating or contributing to an endowment, you gift can become part of a lasting legacy that keeps giving to the University Libraries and Academic Support year after year. Special thanks to Block Communications who bought into the vision of an Information Literacy classroom for the Carlson Library in 2004. Their pledge of $100,000 made it possible for us to create the first technology classroom in the Carlson Library. The Block Communications Information Literacy classroom serves as one of the intellectual hubs of Carlson Library.
