Experience

Assistant Professor, Carlson Library, Human Services Librarian and Librarian for UT Athletics, The University of Toledo, August 2009 -- present

Liaison to the five human services departments of the College of Health Science and Human Service (HSHS):  Counselor Education & School Psychology; Criminal Justice; Military Science & Leadership; Social Work; and Undergraduate Legal Specialties.  My instruction and collection development activities for the sixteen associated programs and UT Athletics include:  performing reference and research consultations for professors, staff, and students; providing information literacy to classes; and recommending the purchase of books, journals, databases, videos, etc.  With Athletics, I hold regular office hours twice a week at the Larimer Student Center.  I assist student- athletes with finding the journal articles, statistics, books, and other sources they need for their papers, presentations, and assignments. 

Courses taught:

  • CRIM 6980 "Criminal Justice & Popular Culture" (co-instruct with Morris Jenkins, Criminal Justice Dept., during summer sessions; on online course with graduate students), 2009 - present
  • CRIM 4990 "Criminal Justice & Popular Culture" (co-instruct with Morris Jenkins, Criminal Justice Dept., during summer sessions; a traditional course with undergraduates), 2009 - present
  • COMM 2400 "Introduction to Communication" taught one time, spring semester 2007.

Prior to coming to The University of Toledo, Professor Hickam was the Head of Reference at the Mansfield campus of The Ohio State University for five years.

Research Interests 

  1. The study of a visual thinking, visual learning, & communication (also known as multimedia learning);
  2. The preservation of music books, periodicals, recordings, and other primary sources in academic archives; and
  3. Strategies and methods for fostering popular culture research and collaborations.

Publications

Newsletter article: "Archiving the History of a Loud Leisure Activity" (co-authored with Thomas Atwood, Coordinator of Information Literacy & Library Instruction at The University of Toledo) is a feature article that was published in the March 2009 (issue 82; pp. 32 - 34) of the Leisure Studies Association Newsletter (Eastbourne, UK).

Book Chapter: "Planning an Information Commons: Our Experiences at The University of Toledo's Carlson Library" (Co-authored with John Phillips, Associate Professor & Maps and Reference Librarian, The University of Toledo Libraries) appears in the  book Our New Public, A Changing Clientele: Bewildering Issues or New Challenges for Managing Libraries? (Libraries Unlimited, 2008; edited by Gerard B. McCabe).

Our paper discusses our project with Bowling Green State University to establish a special collection of books, magazines, and recordings on heavy metal music and culture within the Sound Recordings Archive.

Panel Discussion at international conference: Member of the roundtable discussion "A New Subfield?: Comics and Music" at the Comic Book In Popular Culture Conference (October 24-25, 2008, Bowling Green State University).
