The University Libraries own or has access to many of the journals indexed by databases such as MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Science Citation Index, and Biological Abstracts. Before hurrying to the journal collection with a list of citations, make sure the Library owns or has access to the needed journals by checking the University of Toledo online catalog.
In the catalog, do a title search for the title of the journal.Search for the exact, full title of the journal, not the abbreviation. (Although sometimes using the abbreviation will find what you need.On the citation printout from MEDLINE, CINAHL, and other databases, the journal title can be found in the source, journal name, or appears in field. The field labeled title is usually the article title. Make sure you search for the journal title. To see only what is available at the Mulford Library, after completing your search, from the View the Entire Collection drop-down menu choose Health Science Library.
If the catalog presents a list of titles from which to choose, the journal will be the title that is followed by "PERIODICAL/SERIAL".If you are not sure what the exact title of the journal is, contact Mulford Reference Assistance (419-383-4218) or check the National Library of Medicine's List of Serials Indexed for Online Users.
The journal record gives information about the availability of the journal, whether print or electronic. If there is a title that does not have a format designation (PERIODICAL/ SERIAL, BOOK, etc.), usually that indicates that there are a number of records with this title. Click on the title to see if the journal can be found within that sublist of titles.
Only the most recent twenty years of journals are stored here in the Library. If the print format is needed, click on the "Latest Received" link. Those issues in the boxes are still current. For issues that are older than those in the boxes, check the "Library has:" statement at the top of the page. If the Library has the needed volume, it will be bound.
For more information about online journals, see our Using Online Journals webpage or our Online Journals help sheet.
Journals published more than twenty years ago are stored off-site. If one of these older journals are needed, contact a library staff member for assistance.
Go to the Online Catalog Search Menu. Access to the catalog is available free to anyone on the Internet. Access to full-text resources through the catalog, however, is restricted by the publishers to those who are on campus or who are registered with the University Libraries. Access to some resources is limited to people who are affiliated with programs on the Health Science Campus or the Medical Center.
