Services for Patrons with Disabilities
The Library staff want to ensure that all patrons can use the library services and collections. Please let us know if you encounter any barriers to access. While the libraries are committed to providing equal access, we cannot provide personal reading, copying, typing, or note-taking services. If you are a UT student who requires personalized assistance, we encourage you to contact the Office of Accessibilityat 419.530.4981 or 419.530.2612 for TDD.
Adaptive Equipment
At Carlson Library, computer workstations located in Microform & Multimedia and in the Canaday Center are customized to assist those with visual and mobility impairments or learning disabilities. Each workstation is equipped with
- Text View - screen enlargement software
- Dragon Naturally Speaking - dictation software
- Kurzweil 3000 - scanning system
- Adjustable height desk with swing-arm monitor
Please log in to your UTAD (university) account to enjoy maximum use of these workstations. The library staff can provide basic assistance, but cannot provide technical assistance or software instruction. Please see the Office of Accessibility if you need training on this software.
Magnifying lens sheets for print material are available at the Carlson Library Reference Desk.AtMulford Library, the Computer Learning Resource Center (6th Floor Mezzanine, Mulford Library) provides a computer workstation that is customized to assist those with visual and mobility impairments or learning disabilities. This workstation is equipped with
- ZoomText - screen enlargement software
- Dragon Naturally Speaking - dictation software
- Kurzweil 3000 - scanning system (also on three other workstations)
- Wheelchair-accessible, adjustable height desk with swing-arm monitor
- Jaws 9.0 - speech technology which allows access to applications on the Internet
A generic login is used for this workstation. The CLRC staff can provide basic assistance, but cannot provide technical assistance or software instruction. Please see the Office of Accessibility if you need training on this software.
The Online Resources Room (4th Floor, Mulford Library) provides Sorensen Video Relay Services (VRS). The Sorensen VRS is a free, 24-hour service that allows communications using American Sign Language to place and receive phone calls to a hearing person.

Proxy Borrowing
Patrons with disabilities can identify a proxy borrower who can check out items for them at the library. Your proxy will need to present both your UT ID and his or her ID (such as a drivers license) to verify that he or she they can take out books under your name. This is done as a security precaution. To designate a proxy borrower, print out and complete this form and bring it to the circulation desk or send it tothe Circulation Department (Mailstop #509).
Material Retrieval
We are happy to retrieve books and other material from our shelves for users who unable to reach materials by themselves. Whenever possible we retrieve materials immediately, but at times we may need one business day (excluding weekends and holidays) to provide this service. Materials not retrieved immediately will be placed on hold for 10 days at the Circulation Desk. Patrons should complete a Material Retrieval Request Form at the Reference Desk or e-mail a list that includes the Author, Title, and Call # for each book to the Reference Department, AskIt@utnet.utoledo.edu. Keep in mind that this service is only for books and materials at University of Toledo Libraries, other items may be obtained through OhioLINK borrowing or our Interlibrary Loan service.
Photocopying of Periodical Articles
For users unable to make their own photocopies at Carlson Library, the library staff can photocopy articles or portions of other non-circulating materials from our collections. Photocopies will be made within one business day (excluding weekends and holidays) from the date of request, and the cost will be $0.10 per page for photocopies, $0.25 per page for copies from microform. The items can be picked up and paid for at the Circulation Desk. Patrons should complete a Photocopy Request Form at the Reference Desk or e-mail a list that includes the complete citation information for each item to Valerie J. Brown, valerie.brown@utoledo.edu. Please note that articles from publications not at UT may be obtained through our Interlibrary Loan service.
AtMulford Library, the library staff can photocopy articles or portions of other non-circulating materials from our collections for users unable to make their own copies. Photocopies will be made at no cost, and can be picked up at the Service Desk. Patrons can make a request for assistance in person at the Service Desk or call 419.383.4225. Articles from publications not at UT may be obtained through the Interlibrary Loan service (UT affiliates only)
Facilities
Automatic door openers are located at the Carlson Library entrance near the Student Union.
Wheelchair accessible restrooms are located on the 1st and 4th floor of Carlson Library in the elevator lobby and on the 4th and 5th floors of Mulford Library.
Handicap parking spaces for Carlson Library are available in Lot 11 near the Student Union (SU) and Snyder Memorial (SM). See the Bancroft Campus Map for locations. On the Health Science Campus, parking is available in Lot 40, immediately outside Mulford Library.
