The exhibition “Wholly Toledo: The Business and Industry that Shaped the City” looks at the economic history of Toledo from the perspective of the corporate leaders who made their fortunes here.  But what is largely missing from this picture is the perspective of the workers who made those businesses and industries successful.  All of the tycoons who envisioned Toledo’s economic development could not have accomplished any of their successes without the back-breaking, dirty, monotonous, and often dangerous work carried out by those on the shop floor.

The photographs shown here represent our effort to pay homage to the men and women who did that work.  When you look at these pictures, try to imagine how their jobs impacted their lives, and remember how their work contributed to their employers’ bottom line.  Look for the quiet dignity that each of them displays. And respect them for what they gave to our city through their labor.

The Art Gallery also exhibits a dozen paintings by Georges LaChance whose detailed art work represents the workers in various departments at Toledo Scales. View the individual paintings here.
