My research interests have been in cultural and historical geography, more specifically the construction of regional identity, the role of scale and shifting boundaries. In exploring these interrelated topics, I have conducted research in both the United States and Europe.
More recently, my research and publications have related to career and professional development in higher education. In particular, I have served as a principal researcher for the Association of American Geographer’s project “Enhancing Departments and Graduate Education (EDGE) in Geography,” funded by NSF (for more information, see: www.aag.org/edge). One of our goals has been to understand how different department environments shape the experiences and career paths of graduate students at both the master’s and doctoral levels. We have explored how graduate students perceive their academic departmental cultures and the extent to which these cultures shape their professional goals and opportunities. We are also interested in determining how departments and employers might improve the climate and expand employment opportunities for women, minorities and other underrepresented groups in geography.
Related to these efforts, I co-authored two journal articles and a book chapter entitled “Balancing Professional and Personal Lives,” which is included in an edited volume Aspiring Academics: A Resource Guide for Graduate Students and Early Career Faculty (Pearson/Prentice Hall 2008). While this particular book is designed for graduate students planning academic careers, our chapter addresses many issues about balancing various aspects of our lives that can relate to students who are pursuing careers outside of academia as well. Additional scholarly articles are in various stages of publication based on the EDGE Project. I have published in a variety of geography and higher education journals including Journal of Historical Geography, Journal of Cultural Geography, The Professional Geographer, and Research in Higher Education.
