Candidate qualifications for the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program at The University of Toledo are based on the following essential information. When all the appropriate data are received, your application will be considered. Starting in August during the fellowship application season, invitations for interviews will be sent to selected candidates. All interviews will be conducted virtually.

The University of Toledo Sleep Medicine Fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited program. Each year, we accept one fellow to our program through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or have a valid Permanent Resident (Green Card) status. Candidates with a J-1 visa may be considered if their visa is sponsored by the ECFMG and if they are able to renew the J-1 visa for the length of the training program. All candidates should have completed or should anticipate completion of training in an ACGME-accredited program and should be board-eligible or board-certified in any of the following:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Family medicine (or sports medicine)
  • Internal medicine
  • Internal medicine subspecialty (including but not limited to pulmonary/critical care, endocrinology, cardiology, or sports medicine)
  • Neurology (preferably with additional fellowship training in neurophysiology or epilepsy though not required)
  • Otolaryngology
  • Psychiatry

Consideration is given towards candidates who are currently training or practicing at The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, who are alumni of the UToledo medical school or residency/fellowship programs, or who are originally from or currently residing in the Northwest Ohio area or in the surrounding tri-state area including Southeast Michigan and Northeast Indiana. But regardless and above all, we seek candidates who are highly motivated and well qualified, particularly in the following areas: patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, teaching skills, and diversity/cultural competency.

Only completed ERAS applications will be considered.

Application Requirements:
  • Personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation from physicians (both US and/or foreign) dated within the past year, with one letter being from the current program director. All letters must be on letterhead.
  • Official transcript of medical school (must have registrar's signature and seal)
  • Dean's letter
  • Official USMLE transcripts, with all three steps completed, or COMLEX transcripts if applicable
  • ECFMG certified (for international medical graduates)

  • Program sponsors J-1 visa only

When applying to our fellowship program, please be aware that, as per UToledo Graduate Medical Education (GME) policy, residents/fellows shall be paid at a level consistent with his/her training level in the program (R-level) as Post-Graduate (PG-level) and R-level may differ for residents/fellows who have prior training in a different specialty or program, or in their present training program. In this case, the sleep medicine fellowship at UToledo is considered as an R-4 level training program, and therefore all UToledo Sleep Medicine Fellows will be paid an R-4 level salary.

We do not offer any externship or observership rotations in the Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care & Sleep Medicine.
