    Core Facility
New - UT Flow Cytometry Core Facility

    Laboratory Facilities

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology occupies modern, well-equipped laboratories on the second floor of the Health Education Building.  Facilities for tissue culture, protein purification, RNA and DNA analysis, PCR, and gene cloning and expression are found within most laboratories in the Department. A dedicated tissue culture facility, two BSL2+ laboratories, and an outstanding animal resource center are available for approved researchers.
    Special Facilities

The state-of-the-art BSL3 containment facility contains over 2,000 sq. feet for wet laboratory and animal studies on registered human pathogens.

    New Facilities and Equipment

Ultra-Lum Omega 12ic Molecular Imaging & Analysis System.
Used for Gel documentation, fluorescence & chemiluminescence.  Excitation via transilluminator or  epi-illumination.  Common applications include ethidium bromide, SYBR dyes, GFP, Q-dots, FITC, TRITC, and many others.

The Leica DMIRB inverted research microscope contains brightfield, phase, and fluorescence light sources for high resolution imaging, and a Qicam Fast 1394 Monochrome 12-Bit cooled digital camera for image capture.

Molecular Dynamics Storm 840 Phosphorimager is an optical scanner that produces digital images of radiolabeled samples.

The Roche LightCycler operates by rapid air heating and cooling of nucleic acid samples within high surface-to-volume ratio capillaries to ensure complete Real-Time PCR assays in 20-30 minutes.

    Proteomics Core Laboratory
UT's new state-of-the-art Proteomics Core Laboratory (PCL) is set up for differential protein expression analysis, protein/peptide identification and characterization using the latest proteomic technologies. The PCL is equipped with an IPGPhor/Ettan DALT Six 2D-PAGE system (Amercham) for differential protein expression analysis. Protein/peptide identification and characterization will be carried out using ultra high sensitive MALDI-TOF (M@LDI-L/R from Micromass) and LC-Tandem-MS (MAGIC 2002 HPLC from Microm Bioresources and LCQ Deca XP Plus from ThermoFinnigan, capable of analyzing samples at sub-pico mole levels. The PCL is overseen by a full time director and is open to all researchers on a charge/sample basis for data acquisition and analysis as well as for consulting services. The Proteomics facility is overseen by a full-time Director.

    Genomics Core Laboratory

UT has a Genomics Core Laboratory for microarray analysis of RNA or DNA samples using either manufactured or custom arrays. Facility microarray equipment consists of an Affymetrix node for Affymetrix GeneChip hybridi-zations and a Packard BioScience Spot-Array 24 and ScanArray Express pack-age for glass slide microarray printing and hybridization analysis.

The Genomics facility is overseen by a full-time Director.
