Clinical Microbiology Consult Service

The Department of Clinical Microbiology at the University of Toledo Medical Center offers expert consultation in general bacteriology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and molecular infectious diseases from a subspecialty trained, board certified, clinical pathologist.  Official consultative reports in the area of microbiology can be obtained for recommendations regarding specific types of testing in common and uncommon disease states.   With the advent of  new molecular infectious disease testing, it has become increasingly more important to assess the complex interplay between the microorganism and antibiotic susceptibility, the patient, and drug therapy.  We can evaluate antibiotic susceptibility results in the context of the patient and recommend alternative susceptibility testing that would help the physician in the choice of adequate therapy.  For example, unusual and uncommon organisms may require further work-up such as 16S rRNA gene sequencing for identification and referral for special antibiotic susceptibility testing at alternate laboratories.  As a part of this service, we can provide technical and interpretive assistance in the context of the clinical history of the patient. Our goal is to provide timely and expert consultative services that can assist clinicians in providing excellent patient care. For further information and a formal consultation in Clinical Microbiology contact Sherry Bice, the department secretary at 419-383-3752.
