Congratulations to Dr. Hinds! He was invited to write a review manuscript for the well-respected journal, Hypertension, on his recent work about bilirubin, and now the paper has been accepted. The manuscript is titled “Bilirubin, a Cardio-Metabolic Signaling Molecule.” It has been highlighted in October’s publication of Hypertension. Well done!

Congratulations to Dr. Edwin Sanchez! His manuscript was accepted in Journal of Biological Chemistry. The title is: "Protein phosphatase 5 and the tumor suppressor P53 down-regulate each other’s activities in mice”. Dr. Sanchez commented, “There are many authors, so let me just say that I was part of a big collaboration with my long-time colleagues, Drs. Shou and Weidong at Indiana University.”

The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute awarded Dr. Joe a $2.64 million grant to study the role of gut microbiota in hypertension. Dr. Joe pioneered the discovery of the link between gut microbiota and inherited hypertension. The new grant titled ‘Genetic, Epigenetic and Dietary Salt effects on Microbiota and Hypertension’ aims to follow up on this pioneering discovery to study the various mechanisms by which gut microbiota contribute to the inheritance and progression of salt-sensitive forms of inherited hypertension. Other faculty collaborators on this grant are Dr. Matam Vijay-Kumar and Dr. Ritu Chakravarti.

Congratulations to Dr. Saurabh Chattopadhyay and Dr. Terry Hinds! The National Institutes of Health awarded Dr. Saurabh Chattopadhyay (Medical Microbiology & Immunology) and Dr. Terry Hinds (Physiology and Pharmacology) a grant (R21)to study the function of Interferon Regulatory Factor 3 (IRF3) in alcoholic liver diseases (ALD) titled, “How Non-Transcriptional IRF3 Prevents ALD”. Dr. Chattopadhyay is Principal Investigator and Dr. Hinds is Co-Investigator.
Congratulations to Dr. Cam McCarthy! He was awarded a post-doc grant from the American Heart Association and funding was effective July 1, 2018. The title of his grant is, “Decreased autophagy leads to proteotoxicity and senescence in hypertension-associated premature vascular aging”. Well done!

Congratulations to Dr. Cheng, who is a co-author on a manuscript that was accepted for publication in American Journal of Physiology. The manuscript is entitled, "Salt-sensitive (Rapp) Rats from Envigo Spontaneously Develop Accelerated Hypertension Independent of Ovariectomy on a Low Sodium Diet" and contributing authors are: Amrita Pai, Crystal West, Aline Maria Arlindo de Souza, Xi Cheng, David West, Hong Ji, Xie Wu, Chris Baylis, and Kathryn Sandberg.

Congratulations to Dr. Terry Hinds! He was a finalist for the Medical Research Society research award and during the selection process of June 21st, he was chosen as the winner of a $50,000 grant. He will use his grant to continue research on obesity-induced diabetes. Well done, Dr. Hinds!

Congratulations to Saroj Chakraborty, a PhD student in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology working in Dr. Bina Joe’s laboratory, who won the second best poster award at the 45th Midwest Pharmacology Colloquium held at Michigan State University on June 1, 2018. This long-standing Pharmacology Colloquium of the Midwest Pharmacology Departments is jointly organized and comprised of students and faculty of the Departments of Pharmacology in The University of Michigan, The Michigan State University, Wayne State University and The University of Toledo College of Medicine.
Congratulations to Iyad Manaserh (Hill Lab)! He was one among several recipients honored for their achievements in a ceremony held May 24th in the Grand Ballroom at The Radisson. He was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences Program Outstanding Student. Well done!

Also invited for oral presentations were faculty and fellows from the Center for Hypertension and Precision Medicine, Dr. Lauren Koch, Dr. Xi Cheng, Mr. Saroj Chakraborty and Ms. Sarah Galla.

Congratulations to Dr. Vijay Kumar! He has been invited to serve on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology: Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology. The appointment would begin immediately upon acceptance and Editorial Board members initially serve a one-year term, which can be renewed for a further two years by mutual agreement based on their level of involvement in the journal.

Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer Hill and Emma Wang, whose manuscript, "PI3Kα inactivation in leptin receptor cells increases leptin sensitivity but disrupts growth and reproduction" was published in JCI Insight.
Congratulations to Dr. Ritu Chakravarti, joint faculty member of Physiology and Pharmacology and CHPM member, who received funding from the University of Toledo Rocket Fuel Fund for a collaborative project to build a composite sensor that can measure real-time reactive oxygen species in tissues and liquids. This exemplary collaboration is with Dr. Kim, College of Engineering faculty member, who has an interest in developing electrochemical sensors, while Dr. Chakravarti is an expert on reactive oxygen species. The title of the project is “Time Electrochemical Sensor for Detecting Free Radicals” and the funding is for one year.

Congratulations to Dr. Vijay-Kumar! He has been selected to receive an award from the American Society for Nutrition/ASN Foundation. This year, there were more than 160 nominations for various awards that recognize scientists, clinicians and scholars for outstanding contributions to nutrition research, education and practice. He will be recognized at Nutrition 2018, ASN’s inaugural flagship meeting, which will be held June 9-12, 2018 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA.
Dr. Matam VijayKumar has joined the University of Toledo College of Medicine as the founding Director of The University of Toledo-Microbiome Consortium (UT-MiCo). http://www.utoledo.edu/med/depts/physpharm/hypertension_center/mico/ .
Dr. VijayKumar is an NIH funded investigator and comes to us from Penn State University. He holds a primary appointment in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and a joint appointment in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology.
His team currently consists of two excellent postdoctoral fellows, Dr. Vishal Singh and Dr. Piu Saha, who both have independent training grants; and two graduate students, Xia Xiao and Beng San Yeoh.
