Regular track in the medical physics program

Bachelor's degree in physics or applied physics from an approved institution is a pre-requisite for admission to the graduate medical physics program. Other physical science or engineering degrees may be considered if the appropriate fundamental physics courses have been completed, equivalent to a minor in physics (including general physics with calculus and upper level courses such as electricity and magnetism, atomic physics, nuclear physics, modern physics, quantum mechanics, or mechanics). Completion of a senior-level undergraduate anatomy course is also preferred. Fulfillment of these requirements provides eligibility for the initial certification in Radiological Physics by the ABR.

Candidates presented with some deficiencies in course work may be considered for admissions upon completion of the equivalency of a minor in physics. For example, at The University of Toledo the following courses are required to obtain a minor in physics:

• Physics 2130 - Physics for Science and Engineering Majors I (or Physics 2070 - General Physics I)
• Physics 2140 - Physics for Science and Engineering Majors II (or Physics 2080 - General Physics II, or Physics 2100 - Physics with Calculus)
• Physics 3180 - Intermediate Laboratory
• Physics 3310 - Modern Physics I
• Physics 3320 - Modern Physics II
• Physics 4230/5230 - Electricity & Magnetism I (required by the ABR)
• The total number of  credit hours is 22.

How to Apply

Admissions are given only for Fall semester, and considered on first come first serve basis, therefore earlier applications are encouraged.

Candidates can apply following the link below, indicating whether they are applying for the Master of Science in Biological Sciences (MSBS) program offered through the College of Medicine (Health Science campus) or Ph.D. program, offered through the College of Arts and Sciences (Main campus). Please enter the coding of the program of your choice in the application:

Ph.D. in Medical Physics (College of Arts and Sciences)	AS-PHYS-Ph.D. - Physics

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer any funded positions for Ph.D. students interested in medical physics. This is because we are using all of our funding on the existing students. Unfunded Ph.D. positions are still available but tuition and living expenses will not be covered and must be self-funded. 

Requirements

To be considered for the program, candidates must submit the following documents and comply with listed requirements:

3. Resume (optional)
4. Grade Point Average = minimum 3.0
5. Official confirmation of Degree(s) awarded and transcripts attested
       **Note: Copies of transcripts are not accepted. It is required that all international transcripts be evaluated into U.S. academic credentials (website addresses World Education Services www.wes.org or Education Credential Evaluators www.ece.org). 
6. A GRE score is not required for acceptance.  However,, some applicants may benefit from a GRE score to strengthen their applicant.  Suggested minimum GRE scores are listed below. (The University of Toledo Institutional Code = 1845)

7. International applicants must meet at least one of the following English language proficiency requirements.

• TOEFL IBT equal to 80 or above, IELTS equal to 6.5 or above, PTE equal to 58 or above,Duolingo equal to 105 or above.
• Graduated from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or attended at least one year full time at a regionally accredited US institution earning a 3.0or higher GPA
• Proof of citizenship from one of the following countries:

Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Canada (all provinces except Quebec), Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati,Liberia, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Micronesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales), Zambia, Zimbabwe. students are required to take the TOEFL. Minimum TOEFL score requirements:

8. Three letters of recommendation

Instruction on how to submit letters of recommendation are included in the graduate application portal. Letters should be receive electroncally, submitted by the letter writer.
