Bacterium terriblus  is a Gram-negative pathogen that causes life-threatening skin infections and cellulitis.  Bioinformatic predictions indicate that  B. terriblus  encodes at least four genes with surface-exposed domains and/or homology to previously-described bacterial virulence factors.  One of these genes,  btpX , was required for virulence as  DbtpX mutants were avirulent in a mouse skin abscess model.  In addition, antibodies to BtpX specifically bound to the bacterial surface and blocked  in vitro  infection of epithelial cells.  Future studies will test DbtpX as a live, attenuated mutant to protect against  B. terriblus  infections.
