Scholarships for Entering Medical Students
The Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County Richard D. Ruppert, M.D. Scholarship
The Richard D.
Ruppert, M.D. Scholarship is presented annually by the Academy of Medicine of Toledo
and Lucas County to medical students who demonstrate
outstanding academic achievement, as well as service and leadership.
Thomas Altmayer, M.D. Memorial Scholarship
The Thomas Altmayer, M.D. Memorial Scholarship is given to an
academically superior incoming student to provide financial support for their medical
education. This fund was endowed in 1997 by
contributions from family, friends, and classmates in memory of Dr. Altmayer, a 1991
graduate of the former MCO, who died in October 1995.
Dr. John D. Booth and Lorine Jones Booth Memorial Scholarship
This full-tuition scholarship is awarded to a
first-year medical student who demonstrates academic excellence and leadership potential
in the field of medicine. The award was
established in 2003 by Mr. Alan D. Booth in memory of both his wife and his father.
Mr. Booth was a nine-year member of the former MCO
Foundation Board of Trustees. The award is renewable for four years, based upon academic
standing.
Bowling Green State University Foundation Scholarship
The Bowling Green State University Foundation
Scholarship was founded in 2001 to recognize academically superior graduates of BGSU.
Thomas J. Brennan Memorial Scholarship
The Thomas J. Brennan Memorial Scholarship was established to support
University of Toledo College of Medicine medical students. The Brennan Financial Group
Endowment established this scholarship with the UT
Foundation in memory of Thomas J. Brennan to support research, education, and clinical
care at the UT Health Science Campus. The
scholarship is renewable for four years based upon good academic standing.
Dorothy and Ashel Bryan Scholarship
The Dorothy and Ashel Bryan Scholarship was established in recognition
of the Bryan’s generous contributions to the UT Health Science Campus. The scholarship
is based on academic excellence and financial need;
priority is given to students graduating from Bowling Green State University prior
to entering the College of Medicine. Mr. Bryan served nine
years on the Board of Trustees of the former MCO followed by nine years on the former
MUO Foundation Board of Trustees. An accomplished
artist, the late Mrs. Bryan was active for many years in efforts to beautify the Health
Science Campus. Mrs. Bryan also created the
nationally renowned Chemo Paintings, which reflect her experience with cancer.
College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate Legacy of Excellence Presidential Scholarships
The Legacy of Excellence
Presidential Scholarships are funded by the College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate and
the UT Board of Trustees, and were created in order to push
UT to the forefront of health science education. These Legacy of Excellence Scholarships
provide full tuition to students who have
demonstrated superior scholarly ability and are renewable for four years based on
continued academic excellence.
College of Medicine Diversity Scholarship
The University of Toledo College of Medicine Diversity Scholarship
was established in 2004 by the University of Toledo Foundation and the African-American
Recruitment Committee to recognize medical students
underrepresented in medicine.
DaimlerChrysler Corporation Diamante Latino Scholarship
The DaimlerChrysler Corporation Diamante Latino
Scholarship was established in 2004 through the Diamante Awards, which is sponsored
by The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University,
Owens Community College and Lourdes College. The scholarship is given to an outstanding
Latino student and is renewable based on good
academic standing.
Huntington National Bank Underrepresented Minority Scholarship
The Huntington National Bank Underrepresented
Minority Scholarship is awarded to an incoming meritorious student in the UT College
of Medicine, and is renewable based upon continued good
academic standing in the medical school curriculum.
The Delbert L. Latta Scholarship
Mr. Delbert L. Latta, from Bowling Green, Ohio, was a member of the United
States Congress for 16 terms between 1959 and 1989. Mr. Latta established this scholarship
to benefit deserving and exemplary medical
students who are residents of Ohio counties in which he served as an elected official.
Frank McCullough, M.D. Scholarship
Named in memory of the fifth president of the former Medical
College of Ohio, The Frank S. McCullough, M.D. Scholarship was established to recruit
the best, brightest students to The University of Toledo
College of Medicine. These bright alumni will help position the College as a leader
in healthcare education and will become our legacy of
excellence.
National City Bank Diamante Latino Scholarship
The National City Bank Diamante Latino Scholarship was
established in 2004 and is awarded to an incoming Latino student. The scholarship
is a direct result of a fundraising initiative between
The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Owens Community College
and Lourdes College. The scholarship is renewable based
on continued good academic standing in the medical school curriculum.
Dorothy MacKenzie Price Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Dorothy MacKenzie Price to
support a student who demonstrates exceptional academic performance. The scholarship
is renewable for four years based on continued
academic excellence.
Borge R. Reimer Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Reimer Endowed Scholarship Fund was established to provide
scholarship support in order to help recruit the best and the brightest students to
the UT Health Science Campus.
Dr. Barry L. Richardson Scholarship
Barry Lovell Richardson, Ph.D., who was assistant vice president for
multicultural affairs, professor of physiology, and associate dean for admissions
from 1977 through 2004, served as an advocate for diversity,
multiculturalism and the role of cultural competence in health care. This scholarship
is awarded to a first-year underrepresented minority
medical student who has demonstrated the potential for excellence in medicine and
health care delivery, as well as leadership service to
underrepresented populations within their community.
Richard D. & Elizabeth S. Ruppert Presidential Scholarship
The Richard D. and Elizabeth S. Ruppert
Scholarship fund supports outstanding medical students who exhibit exceptional academic
performance. This scholarship provides full tuition
and is renewable for four years, based on continued academic excellence. Richard
D. Ruppert, M.D. was president of the former Medical
College of Ohio from 1977 until his retirement in 1993. His wife, Elizabeth S. Ruppert,
M.D., was a professor of pediatrics and chief of
the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics during the same period.
David Hamilton Ryerson Memorial Scholarship
The David Hamilton Ryerson Memorial Scholarship is presented to
an academically gifted, promising medical student with financial need who demonstrates
the self-discipline and self-confidence that exemplified
Mr. Ryerson, a first-year medical student at the former MCO who died in a plane crash
on January 7, 1994.
Milton and Marguerite Schulz Memorial Scholarship
The Milton and Marguerite Schulz Memorial Scholarship Fund
was established to enhance the diversity in the College of Medicine by supporting
a scholarship for an incoming African-American student with
excellent admission credentials and a strong desire to give back to his/her community.
UT Foundation Legacy of Excellence Scholarship
This Legacy of Excellence Scholarship, funded by the UT
Foundation Board of Trustees, is awarded to an outstanding underrepresented minority
student in the UT College of Medicine in order to enhance
the diversity of the medical school class and the medical profession. The scholarship
is a full-tuition award that is renewable based upon
good academic standing.
The Philip S. Willis Scholarship
The Philip S. Willis Student Aid Fund was established through the will of
Mr. Philip S. Willis in 1946. A gift from the UT Foundation, the scholarship provides
support to UT medical students who are graduates from
Toledo area high schools, and is awarded based on academic merit and financial need.
The University of Toledo Health Science Campus Bookstore Award
The University of Toledo Health Science
Campus Bookstore Award is presented annually to students based on academic merit and
need.
The University of Toledo Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Scholarship
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Scholarship supports outstanding medical students who exhibit exceptional academic
performance. The scholarship is renewable for four years
based on continued academic excellence.
The University of Toledo Health Science Campus Satellites Scholarship
The University of Toledo Health
Science Campus Satellites, the campus volunteer organization, support scholarships
for medical students based on academic merit and need.
The Satellites Scholarship is renewable for four years based on good academic standing.
Scholarships for Continuing Students
William A. Blank, M.D. Scholarship
Dr. William A. Blank was a colorectal surgeon in the community, a
volunteer faculty member, and a member of the former MCO Foundation Board of Trustees.
This scholarship, established by his partner, Dr.
Abdullatif Nimr, is awarded to students who excel in the field of surgery. The scholarship
honors Dr. Blank’s cordial relations with
his patients and fellow physicians, and his great love for education.
College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate Dr. and Mrs. El-Shafie Scholarship
The Dr. and Mrs. El-Shafie
Scholarship was established in 2005 and is awarded annually by the UT College of Medicine
Alumni Affiliate to a fourth-year medical student who
demonstrates academic merit and financial need. A preference is given to students
interested in Pediatrics.
College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate Jose Fleites Memorial Scholarship
The Jose Fleites Scholarship is
presented annually by the UT College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate to a fourth-year
medical student who demonstrates the friendship to classmates
and professors, and the warmth and compassion to patients that exemplified Jose Fleites,
Jr., a student at the former Medical College of Ohio who
died in an automobile accident in December 1975.
College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate George Haidet Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2000 by College
of Medicine graduates to honor classmate George Haidet, M.D., who graduated from the
former MCO in 1977, and passed away in 1999, the George
Haidet Scholarship is awarded annually by the UT College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate
to a student entering his/her second year of medical
school. This scholarship is awarded to a student who best exemplifies George’s dedication
to medicine, high academic standards,
compassion, and zest for life, which made him such an outstanding physician and friend
to all.
College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate Dr. Robert T. Tidrick Memorial Scholarship
Named in honor of the late
surgeon and outstanding educator at the former Medical College of Ohio, the Dr. Robert
T. Tidrick Scholarship is presented by the UT
College of Medicine Alumni Affiliate to a fourth-year medical student who demonstrates
exceptional academic talent and clinical skills.
College of Medicine Commitment to Excellence Scholarship
The UT College of Medicine Commitment to Excellence
Scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated superior academic performance
that has been sustained throughout the preclinical and
clinical curricula.
College of Medicine Faculty-Student Scholarship
Supported by faculty and staff donations, the
Faculty-Student Scholarship recognizes academic excellence in the medical school curriculum,
the pursuit of scholarship, and leadership
qualities.
College of Medicine Presidential Scholarships
The University of Toledo College of Medicine Presidential
Scholarships are full-tuition scholarships awarded to first year medical students
who exhibit exceptional academic performance and leadership
potential in the field of medicine. The scholarships are renewable for four years
based on continued academic excellence.
College of Medicine Academic Excellence Scholarships
The UT College of Medicine Scholarships are awarded to
continuing medical students who have demonstrated superior academic performance in
the medical school curriculum. These scholarships,
funded by the University’s Lending Program, provide financial support for the students’
medical education.
Ellery T. Eaton Scholarship
The Ellery T. Eaton Scholarship was established in 2000, through a bequest from
Gertrude Eaton in memory of her late husband. This scholarship is awarded to University
of Toledo College of Medicine medical students in
recognition of academic excellence.
Dr. Norman E. Fisher Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1986 through a gift from Mrs. Norman E. Fisher in
honor of her husband, a prominent Toledo obstetrician who died in 1985, the Dr. Norman
E. Fisher Scholarship is given annually to students with
demonstrated interest in obstetrics and excellence in the Obstetrics and Gynecology
clerkship.
French Family Scholarship
The recipient shall be a current female medical student who has demonstrated
academic excellence and has at least one child. The student must also have demonstrated
academic achievement. Recipients of this
scholarship shall be known as the “French Family Scholars.”
The Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. Scholarship for Excellence and Professionalism
The Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.
Scholarship for Excellence and Professionalism recognizes academically superior medical
students who demonstrate outstanding professional
behavior exemplary of the highest standards of the medical profession. This scholarship
was established by the Dean of the College of
Medicine to provide financial support to meritorious students so that they can remain
highly focused on their academic studies and pursue a
graduate medical education program based upon intellectual desires and not the financial
realities of life.
Frederick M. Hiss, M.D. Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2005 by the friends of Dr. Hiss, a
family physician in the community, to support scholarships at the UT College of Medicine.
The Hiss scholarship is awarded to a fourth-year
medical student interested in a primary care specialty who has demonstrated academic
excellence.
George Isaac Presidential Scholarship
The George Isaac Presidential Scholarship is a full-tuition
scholarship awarded to a first-year medical student who demonstrates exceptional academic
performance and leadership potential in the field of
medicine. This award was established in 2005 by George Isaac, former chairman of the
MCO Board of Trustees and member of the Foundation Board of
Trustees. For decades, Mr. Isaac has been a tireless ambassador of the Health Science
Campus in both fund raising efforts and creating
public awareness for the organization’s initiatives. This scholarship is renewable
for four years, based upon continued academic
excellence.
Professor Daniel A. Koechel Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a UT College of Medicine student who
has demonstrated dedication to the field of medicine, superior academic performance,
and plans to pursue a career in academic medicine.
Richard F. and Frances S. Leighton Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. Leighton, Professor
and Dean Emeritus of the former Medical College of Ohio, and his wife, Frances. This
scholarship is awarded to a medical student with
exceptional academic merit who exemplifies Dr. Leighton’s admirable qualities.
Lucas County Medical Alliance Community Service Award
The Lucas County Medical Alliance (LCMA) is an
organization of volunteers supporting the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas
County. The Lucas County Medical Alliance Community
Service Awards were established in 2006 to recognize medical students in The University
of Toledo College of Medicine for exemplary volunteer
efforts given to the Toledo/Lucas County community.
McGraw-Hill/Lange Achievement Award
This award is presented by the McGraw-Hill Medical Publishing Division
as part of their commitment to support various educational endeavors to contribute
to the continuing high standards, dedication and hard work of
students in medical education. The award, given to the top two students completing
the first year of the medical school curriculum,
consists of textbooks published by the McGraw-Hill Medical Division.
Dr. J. Robert Navarre, Sr. Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of the late J. Robert
Navarre, Sr., M.D., a longtime volunteer faculty member at the former Medical College
of Ohio who also served nine years as a member of the
former MCO Foundation Board of Trustees. The scholarship is awarded to a current
medical student who demonstrates academic abilities and
interest in the areas of surgery, the cardiovascular sciences, or gerontology.
The University of Toledo Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Scholarship
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Scholarship supports outstanding medical students who exhibit exceptional academic
performance. The scholarship is renewable for four years
based on continued academic excellence.
Otto Sasse Memorial Scholarship
Established to support exemplary students, the Otto Sasse Memorial Fund was
created in 1991 through a contribution from the estate of Maria Sasse in honor of
her father, Otto Sasse, M.D., a Toledo surgeon.
Roy Treuhaft Scholarship
Mr. Roy Treuhaft served on the Board of Trustees of the former Medical College of
Ohio from 1974 to 1981. The Roy Treuhaft Scholarship was established by his family
to recognize Mr. Treuhaft’s commitment to the
medical school and the entire Toledo community. The scholarship is awarded to a medical
student with an interest and demonstrated
excellence in the clinical fields dealing with the musculoskeletal system, including
Radiology, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Rheumatology, the
specialty pursued by his son William.
The University of Toledo Health Science Campus Retirees Club Scholarship
The University of Toledo Health
Science Campus Retirees Club Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has
high academic standards, who demonstrates a sense of service to
the school and to the community, and to whom such a scholarship would be significantly
helpful in pursuing his or her education.
The University of Toledo Health Science Campus Satellites Scholarship
The University of Toledo Health
Science Campus Satellites, the campus volunteer organization, support scholarships
for medical students based on academic merit and need.
The Satellites Scholarship is renewable for four years based on good academic standing.
Vernon Volland Memorial Scholarship
The Vernon Volland Memorial Scholarship provides financial support for
medical students who have demonstrated academic excellence. The scholarship was established
in 1972 through a gift from the Automobile Seat
Cover Association of America in memory of Vernon Volland, former executive of the
Association.
The Raoul Wallenberg Scholar Award
Since 1990, 15 worthy students have been named a Wallenberg Scholar for
“Exemplary and Meritorious Service” to those unable to help themselves. The Award
is named in honor of Raoul Wallenberg, the “Lost
Hero” of World War II. In 1944 Raoul Wallenberg, a 32-year-old non-Jewish businessman,
a citizen of neutral Sweden, accepted an
assignment from the US War Refugee Board to go to Budapest to save Jews from the Nazi
“Final Solution.” The Swedish government
cooperated by giving him diplomatic status. Wallenberg defied the odds and saved
tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest, the last remaining
Jewish community in Nazi-occupied Europe, that summer of 1944. But, he couldn’t save
himself. Wallenberg was arrested by the on-rushing
Soviet forces liberating Hungary in January 1945. He has never been seen free since.
His ultimate fate has never been definitively
determined, even after many years of investigation. On the 5th of October 1981, Raoul
Wallenberg was named an Honorary US citizen by vote
of Congress, signed by President Ronald Reagan. Winston Churchill is the only other
individual accorded this honor in the long history of
our Republic. August 12th, 2007 was the 95th anniversary of Wallenberg’s birth.
Thomas J. Brennan Memorial Scholarship
The Thomas J. Brennan Memorial Scholarship was established to support
University of Toledo College of Medicine medical students. The Brennan Financial Group
Endowment established this scholarship with the UT
Foundation in memory of Thomas J. Brennan to support research, education, and clinical
care at the UT Health Science Campus. The
scholarship is renewable for four years based upon good academic standing.
