SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

Henry R. Kreider Scholarship
The Kreider Scholarships are intended for Chemistry majors. The award selection is
based on academic scholarship. Normally, the scholarships are awarded in the Sophomore
year to take effect for the Junior year. Applications from current Junior-year Kreider
scholars for Senior year scholarship renewals will also be considered as received.
The Kreider Scholarships are in honor of Dr. Henry R. Kreider (PhD, 1910, Johns Hopkins University), Professor of Chemistry at the University of Toledo and Chairman of the Department from 1915 until his retirement in 1944 was a strong and stable influence in the growth and development of the department. His stature as a scientist and teacher was enhanced by his kindly understanding of his students. They looked upon him as counselor and guide, as well as teacher. At his urging, may of his students went on to graduate school in chemistry or to medical school and have held influential positions throughout the country.
In order to continue his influence in the encouragement of quality scholars in the field of chemistry, his three children established the Henry R. Kreider Scholarship Fund in 1955 for undergraduate majors in chemistry. A committee was formed in the Department of Chemistry to administer the Fund and to seek additional contributions from alumni, friends, professional organizations, and chemical industries in the area. Over the years these contributions have made it possible to support multiple scholarships each year from the income of the endowment. Since 1965 the Fund has been administered by the Alumni Foundation.
In addition to the application form, applicants must submit a brief written personal statement stating why they feel they should receive an Henry R. Kreider Scholarship.
