The University of Toledo's Office of Global Initiatives announces the 2009/2010 Foy and Phyllis Penn Kohler Fund for International Studies. Mr. Kohler was a former U.S. ambassador who attended The University of Toledo and received an honorary doctorate of laws in 1964. Kohler grants are intended to facilitate international research, teaching, and other internationalizing activities by UT faculty members. Faculty are eligible for only one Kohler award per academic year. In order to be considered for future Kohler funding, awardees are required to submit a report on curricular innovations, research opportunities, or other internationalizing effects that result from their travel.

The Kohler Faculty International Travel Grant is to be utilized for personal international travel-related expenses only (transportation, accommodation, meals and incidentals). Expenses not covered by the Kohler International Travel Grants include such items as registration fees for seminars/conferences/workshops, research-related (survey expenses and equipment, etc.), and other non-travel expenses. Requests for travel already undertaken without prior approval of the Kohler Committee will not be considered for funding. .

    FUNDING CATEGORIES

    A. International Research and Teaching Grants

The Kohler fund will provide individual grants of up to $1,000 each for projects involving UT faculty international travels promoting international studies. The highest priority will be given to proposals with the potential to further the internationalization of the University of Toledo. Administrators above the department level will not be considered for the awards, which are available only to full-time [non-visiting] faculty, superannuate faculty, and department chairs. In general, travel to conferences will not receive as high a priority for funding in this grant area as travel involving research that leads to curricular innovation.

    B. Junior Faculty International Travel Grant

The Kohler fund will provide individual grants of up to $1,000 each to support travel by UT tenure-track untenured assistant professors to international conferences to present their research and to explore international opportunities and partnerships. To be eligible for this grant, a faculty member must hold a full-time tenure-track appointment but not yet be tenured.
