The objective of the faculty forum is to grow a community of faculty members who are committed to service learning pedagogy and foster a culture of service learning on the UT campus. Faculty members previously offering service learning courses will pass on practical tips and insights for incorporating service into classes across disciplines. The Office of Service Learning and Community Engagement (OSLCE) is committed to integrating service learning pedagogy into instructional programs through active involvement of faculty and students in civic engagement. Grants moneys are provided to support faculty development of such initiatives. Download the 2008-2009 Request for Proposals here. Funds can be used by faculty developing a service learning course or component for: compensation (except department chairs) for course development costs; for travel; attendance at conferences; and to hire a student worker or work-study student. Six individual faculty awards: $1500 Student Service Ambassadors Faculty can elect to have a Student Service Ambassador as part of their class, in order to facilitate logistics of their service activities, to aid with reflection sessions, to keep contacts with our office, etc. Ambassadors can be drawn from students enrolled in the class or could be from outside, and would receive a stipend and training from our office. | |

Course Consultation |
Individualized meetings with our office can help you integrate academic service learning into a pre-existing course or create a new course. We can help you identify course objectives that might be tied to service learning, with proper methods for transforming service into a powerful tool for learning, best reflection practices, how to structure service experiences, how to evaluate learning outcomes, and much more. We also conduct department level consultations to answer questions and survey the needs of faculty in that department. |

Classroom Presentations |
OSLCE staff can visit your classroom to present on service learning theory, campus opportunities, background, or other topics as needed. |

Assist faculty in engaged community based research/scholarship. |

Resources |
Our office can provide faculty with guidebooks and research material on service learning pedagogy. In addition, we can search out material that might best apply to your discipline, such as example syllabi, best practice findings, or key research studies. |

Assessment |
Provide and administer pre and post test survey instruments to assess the impact of service learning on students personal, academic, and community development. We can also assess how community partners felt about the relationship and possible community impacts. We can also examine faculty satisfaction with community partnerships, program structure, and office support. |
