Points of Pride: The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy
The College of Pharmacy was founded in 1904 and was the first college established at The University of Toledo. The college originally shared a building with the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Law and Medicine in downtown Toledo and will soon expand to a newly constructed state-of-the art facility on the Health Sciences campus.
Having grown from a total enrollment of approximately 850 in 2000, the College of Pharmacy achieved a total health science degree enrollment of more than 1,500 students in 2007.
The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy is the only Ohio school of pharmacy that has established pharmacy partnerships to provide place-bound students with direct access to careers in pharmacy or the pharmaceutical sciences. Nine students have graduated from the former partnership with Cleveland State University, and the college currently has active partnerships with Ursuline College and Owens Community College in Ohio.
International relationships include partnerships and research opportunities with The University of Szeged in Hungary and the North Sichuan Medical College in China, among others.
Initiated in 1997, the BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree program is one of 21 such programs nationwide, and is the first and only undergraduate degree program in Ohio that emphasizes the business of pharmacy and healthcare. The BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree program is sharply focused on distinct majors, and requires the completion of a cognate practicum.
Each year, more than $1 million in grant money is awarded to the College of Pharmacy for research and development.
As part of its diversity initiative, the College of Pharmacy hosted a one-day camp for children of migrant farm workers. The college also partnered with Ursuline College to initiate a pharmacy summer camp on their campus in 2008. The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy is a nationally-recognized leader in promoting the pharmacy profession to high school students through camps and career days. In 2001, the college established a pharmacy summer camp to introduce rising high school seniors to the profession and practice of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences. Many pharmacy camp participants later earn pharmacy degrees from The University of Toledo.
