Tips from a research mentor
|
- Budget sufficient time for the entire process
Although the deadline for most proposals are set
by the sponsor, having a timeline will help researchers to stay on track and meet internal deadlines.
- Assemble a team of colleagues (the Collaborative) with complementary knowledge and skills
Working
well with your colleagues is essential to the process.
- Know your funding agency
Reading about the Funding Agency and thoroughly review their Web site
to get a sense of the types of projects they fund and what they are all about.
- Study other successful proposals
Knowing the proposals that have been funded in the past can
be your key to being funded in the future.
- Read and understand the proposal's procedures
Read through a few times! Each time you read it,
you may see something new to consider. Share with the Collaborative as well.
- Understand the review process
If you aren’t too clear on this, schedule a conference call with
the Foundation's officers. That will allow you to ask questions and learn more about how it works.
- Write clearly, proofread
Make sure you budget both time and money for this. You may need a
professional proofreader to make sure the proposal is as clear as it can be.
- Ask for input and revise
Think of as many people as you can to read over your work. Your
collaborative, proof-readers, grant writers who have done similar work and know the community. The more the better.

2. Grant-Writing Tools: A New
Investigator's Jounal
|
|
This is a well written view into the process of applying for, completing and
reviewing a funding opportunity through the eyes of a new researcher. The author, Laura Castillo-Page, writes a clear
and concise journal entry for each step along the way and raises and answers many questions that new researchers may
encounter. You can find and read the Investigator's Journal here.

| 6. APS Seeks Information About Your
Recognition for Teaching Prowess |
|
Have you or has someone in your
department received a local, regional or national teaching award or an externally funded grant for educational research? If
so, we would like to hear from you.
Advances in Physiology Education now publishes a column called "The Physiology Teacher" that includes announcements
of teaching awards, grants for educational research, and other recognition for educational activities received by APS
members.
Send information for "The Physiology Teacher" to Charles Tipton, Associate Editor, tipton@email.arizona.edu.
For teaching awards, please
include awardee name, affiliation, the date and title of the award, the courses taught by the awardee, and a short note
about the award criteria/selection process (student-selected, departmental nomination, etc.). If your institution
provides a press announcement for the award, you may send that instead. For educational grants, please send the names of
the principal investigators and their affiliations, project title, the granting agency, award amount and duration, and
(optional) 1-2 sentences explaining the goals and objectives of the project.

7. The Table Of Contents Of The June
8, 2007 NIH Guide
|
|
The previous static listings for browsing published NIH Guide announcements have
been replaced with real-time database query listings that retrieve only active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program
Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates stated in those announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices
displays Notices published over the last two years, by default, since expiration dates are not currently assigned to these
announcements. Links to these new resources are available from the main NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page,
at:
>
All announcements (active plus
inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at the top of each listing page.
Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide Database Search page <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm >
is available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
If you have any difficulty obtaining the information you need from the Guide,
contact Carol Reichenbach, carol.reichenbach@utoledo.edu, at HSC extension
4252, or Rick Francis, rick.francis@utoledo.edu, at MC extension 6193.
