7. The Table of Contents of the August 17, 2007 NIH GUIDE

NIH has announced the full implementation of the shortened review cycle process for new investigator R01 applications that are reviewed in Center for Scientific Review (CSR) recurring study sections. ANIARA COAGULATION RESEARCH GRANT provides $5000.00 for "established" investigators (eg, faculty at an academic institution) and for "students / trainees", to do innovative coagulation/hematology research. Deadline for receipt of application is Oct 31, 2007.

The Aniara research panel awards one yearly $5,000 grant for specialized coagulation/hematology research. All proposed projects must be in the coagulation/hematology scientific field of interest.

Funding is restricted to North America, South America, and Latin America, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, and Icelandic citizens. This grant program does not pay educational tuition, nor does it offer scholarships or fellowships of any kind.

Eligibility
Applicants are expected to have advanced degrees (Ph.D. or equivalent) and be associated with an educational organization or institution. Independent researchers or those pursuing a Ph.D.-level degree may apply, but awards to non-PhD. applicants are rare. As a general rule, all applicants are expected to have published a minimum of three articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Grant Amount
Aniara Corporation will award one $5,000 grant recipient per year.

Grant Restrictions
Aniara Coagulation research grants may not be used for indirect costs, overhead, and other expenses not directly related to the project. Fringe benefits are also excluded, as are salaries.

Funds may not be used for travel to scientific/professional meetings or conferences, legal actions, land acquisition, endowments, construction of permanent field stations, or publishing research results.

Your opinion on peer review is so important to NIH that it has extended the peer review survey deadline to September 7. Submit your responses to the NIH survey NIH System to Support Biomedical and Behavioral Research and Peer Review.

NIH's external and internal working groups created the Web-based surveys to seek your opinion on reforming peer review. As fields of science change, NIH wants to ensure that its processes are efficient and effective for investigators and reviewers. In the future, these NIH working groups will develop an implementation plan and launch pilots to develop a new NIH peer review policy.

Here are a few things to think about for some of the topics.

Challenges for the NIH System of Research Support

NIH funds different types of research and investigators at different stages of their careers, so NIH needs a complex system of support mechanisms. But is the system too complex?

Any changes NIH makes to grant mechanisms or duration of grants still need to enable institutes to reach their public health goals within their budgets.

Challenges of the NIH Peer Review Process

Asthe number of applications goes up, NIH needs more reviewers. However, many reviewers find it hard to travel to meetings. NIH faces not only the difficulty of finding the most talented reviewers but also meeting diversity and conflict-of-interest requirements.

NIH is also grappling with the complexity of today's science and how peer review can accommodate it.

Peer Review at Different Career Stages

NIH already gives new investigators special consideration, but what about established investigators and people whose grants train many less experienced investigators?

Should NIH use different strategies to assess investigators at the beginning of and later in their careers? Perhaps NIH should consider different mechanisms of support based on career stage.

Does your computer run on Microsoft Windows Vista? If it does, you'll have to use a different computer to submit your grant application. Grants.gov does not support the Windows Vista operating system.

However, you can convert most of your application to Acrobat portable document format (PDF) on any computer and then attach it to the application using a computer without Windows Vista.

7. The Table of Contents of the August 17, 2007 NIH GUIDE

The previous static listings for browsing published NIH Guide announcements have been replaced with real-time database query listings that retrieve only active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates stated in those announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices displays Notices published over the last two years, by default, since expiration dates are not currently assigned to these announcements. Links to these new resources are available from the main NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page, at:

All announcements (active plus inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at the top of each listing page. Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide Database Search page http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm is available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
