Workshop 6: Increasing Representation from Underrepresented Groups and Institutions

Moderators:
Herb Schroeder and Sheik Jeelani

To create a diverse and competitive U. S. workforce, it is necessary to secure and broaden the participation in NSF programs of underrepresented groups and of institutions which are among those receiving fewer awards and/or fewer dollars from NSF (such as minority serving institutions, community and technical colleges, four-year colleges smaller universities, and institutions in remote areas). PFI programs through their partnerships, collaborations, and networks are very well suited to engage such institutions as well as underrepresented groups in technology innovation. Educational programs resulting from PFI projects can provide significant opportunities both for recruitment of underrepresented groups and the involvement of underrepresented institutions. This session will serve as a forum to highlight the best practices and successes of PFI projects in broadening participation in STEM education and in research resulting in technological innovations.
