The University of Toledo Research Enterprise

Phase 0 SBIR/STTR Program

Proposals Accepted at Any Time

This program supports a faculty member’s participation in the development of a proposal to an SBIR/STTR program. This program buttresses the aim of the UT strategic plan to support the technology transfer goals of the institution. An award of $8,000 may be made to a faculty member who will collaborate with a small business in the development and submission of an SBIR/STTR proposal; this program does not allow faculty salary support. The faculty member is expected to work with the university to protect intellectual property rights to the products or processes described in the proposal. The University of Toledo must receive a subcontract for collaborative research as part of the funded project.

Faculty members at all ranks are eligible for this funding. The purpose of the program is to encourage faculty to work with the local small business community in the development and submission of SBIR/STTR proposals.

The application must include the following:

  1. A completed Phase 0 SBIR/STTR cover page (available from http://utoledo.edu/research/uraf/).
  2. A three-page description of the scientific, educational and/or engineering nature of the problem or opportunity that can be developed into a product or process in the marketplace.
  3. A one-page summary of the plan to work with the small business in a collaborative manner for the preparation and submission of the proposal.
  4. A one-page statement providing evidence that the project is likely to be favorably reviewed by the agency.
  5. A letter from the small business agreeing to collaborate on the project with UT participating as a subcontractor along with a statement that the company will follow UT’s intellectual property rights policy.
  6. A letter from the faculty member’s dean in support of the project.

Submission Requirements
See URAF Submission Procedures for guidance in submitting a proposal.

Within six months of your award, you should submit an electronic copy of the proposal submitted to the federal agency to Robin Lanz (robin.lanz@utoledo.edu).
