Residence Life Damage Charges

Damage Charges Explained:

Students may be billed for common items including but not limited to:
• Missing keys
• Excessive cleaning
• Missing or damaged furniture
• Damages to walls, floors, ceilings, windows, etc.
• Painting
• Common area damage
• Missing cable equipment
• Not checking out of room properly

The Office of Residence Life will assess charges for damage and not normal wear and tear.
• Wear and Tear = The loss, damage, or depreciation of value due to everyday use and can be attributed to age.
• Damages = The loss of value or usefulness as a result of neglect or misuse.

Charges are all inclusive of time, labor, institutional grade materials and professional facilities staff who complete the work.

Village/Resident Advisers will conduct the initial room inspection during check out with the resident if a regular checkout is completed. The Hall Directors will conduct a final room inspection and make an assessment of the final charges after the halls close. Please note, Village/Resident Adviser staff do not have the final say when it comes to damage billing, “My RA said it was fine” is not a legitimate reason to appeal a damage charge as they may have missed damage, not been able to fully inspect the room if roommates/suitemates were still living in the room, or may not have assessed normal wear and tear vs. damage correctly.

If a student has been billed for closing damages, the Office of Residence Life will send an email informing them to review their student account through the myUT.utoledo.edu portal to view the charges. This will give you information on what the charge(s) entail(s).  You are responsible for payment of these charges. Payment can be made online or by visiting the on campus Payment Depository located at Rocket Hall.

For questions or concerns about your damage charges please email the Office of Residence Life.

A professional staff member with the Office of Residence Life will review your question or concern and respond to you ASAP.

Please direct any questions about the process to the Office of Residence Life.
