Residence Hall Safety Information
Both The University of Toledo and its residents share the responsibility for a safe and secure living environment.
Current safety measures:
- Residence Hall Access - Residents have access to their assigned residence hall only and all guests must register at the information desk. Residence Hall doors are locked at all times and residents must use their Rocket ID card to swipe into the building.
- Information Desks and Security Rounds - All residence halls have a 24-hour information desk with a panic button and coordinate nighttime duty rounds.
- Security Cameras - Cameras are stationed throughout the residence halls with live feeds being monitored by the Office of Residence Life staff and the University Police department (UTPD).
- UTPD Community Officer - Every residence hall is assigned a community police officer from UTPD who has a presence within the building.
- UT Alert - All students are encouraged to sign up for UT Alert, an e-mail and text message alert system, to stay informed anytime, anywhere about emergencies from severe weather to a violent episode.
- Outdoor Alert System - The system includes nine loud speakers across all three campuses that will alert students to weather, violent or other types of emergencies immediately.
- Residence Hall Programming - Professional staff provide educational programming to make students aware of safety issues on campus. Some programs include self-defense demonstrations, common sense precautions, and information regarding the location and use of emergency phones around campus.
- Not On My Watch - In honor of Crime Prevention Month, the Division of Student Affairs, The Anti-Bullying Task Force and The University of Toledo Police Department partner throughout the month of October to offer students activities and programs that will encourage them to become active participants in their own personal safety as well as campus safety. - Lock Your Doors - the number one type of crime on campus is a crime of opportunity. Don't give thieves the opportunity and always lock your door even when just going down the hall.
- Do not lend your keys or Rocket ID to anyone.
- Make sure the exterior security doors of the residence hall is secure and not propped open.
- Do not allow strangers to tailgate into the residence halls behind you. Those card swipes are there for a reason.
- Refrain from posting your schedule on social networking sites, such as Facebook. Trusting your schedule with a friend is one thing. Trusting your schedule with the world is another.
- Report lost keys immediately so room lock changes can be made.
- Use the campus escort service by calling 419.530.3024.
- Use the blue light emergency phones around campus when you need.
- Call campus police at ext. 2600 when on campus
- Remember the residence hall staff members - RAs and hall directors - are always there to assist you.
Student Property InsuranceRegardless of where you live, it is very important to make sure your personal belongings are insured. Most renters are not covered by the property owner's insurance; so in the event of fire, theft, lightning strikes, water damage, etc. which are not caused by the property owner, you are responsible for replacing your personal items. If your parents claim you as a dependent, check to see if you are covered under their homeowner's policy. If not, they may be able to purchase a "rider" to cover you as you live away from home.
You also can purchase your own policy, we recommend calling an insurance agent to get quotes. Ask about a policy that provides replacement costs. This may seem to cost you more up-front, but it can be worth the price if disaster strikes, since most insurance companies pay a depreciated value for your possessions.
