Program Overview

Building a Sustainable Future

About the Division

The Division of Community and Economic Development is an outreach arm of the University of Toledo's University College focused on using technology and capacity-building efforts to aid urban and regional communities' transition from manufacturing-based to technology-driven economies.

The Division staff is lead by Kenneth Dobson, a 30-year practitioner in urban economic development. Other staff members include graduate assistants in engineering and community outreach specialists.

Mission

The Division's mission is to facilitate competitive and sustainable economic development in urban and regional communities transitioning from manufacturing-based to technology-driven economies using technology-based strategies, tools and practices and partners in higher education. It is also the Division's mission to develop technology-based strategies, tools and practices that are widely recognized and implemented--thereby redefining how economic development is thought of and applied everywhere.

Objectives

  • To enhance the technological economic competitiveness of urban and regional economies.
  • To keep abreast of technology trends and practices.
  • To develop state-of-the-art strategies, tools and practices to promote economic development.
  • To develop and implement capacity-building practices to ensure the participation of major industries and historically disadvantaged segments of society.

Programs

The Division currently operates the Capacity-Building in Construction Program (CBIC). CBIC is designed to provide opportunities to entrepreneurs and workers from historically disadvantaged segments of the workforce for developing and refining their construction-related business and trade skills. The aim is to supply qualified, competent workers and DBE's to the industry while also providing traditionally underserved groups with access to good jobs and increased long-term earnings. The program is made up of four main "modules" or components:

CED

  Primary Focus:

Emerging Applied Construction Technologies Module (EACT)

   Construction Workforce Preparedness Module (CWPM)

           Specialty Program:

     · Construction Engineering, Planning and Design Module (CEPD)

            Construction Entrepreneurship Module (CEM)
