    Placement Testing
    Post Secondary Students -  The following classes require either placement tests or adequate ACT scores for students to register.
    • English
    • Chemistry
    • Math
    • Foreign Language classes past the 1110 course number.
       

    Tests are given in the following locations:

    • Testing Center, Field House Room 1080, Phone 419.530.1269
    • Scott Park Testing Center,  Phone 419.530.3269

    Placement tests can be taken in the Field House, Room 1080. Placement tests are available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; no appointment is needed however all tests must be completed by 4:45 PM so plan your arrival accordingly.  Please bring a valid form of picture identification with you (driver's license, passport, or state ID) to complete placement testing.

    Class Requirements

    English (ENGL 1110, Composition I) – Must have an ACT score of 20 or higher. If students have taken the ACT test and do not yet have the results and want to register for English Composition I, an English placement test must be taken. (see above for Test Center locations). Students will be asked to write an essay on a given topic; the writing will be evaluated for content, coherence, development, and style. This test is used for placement into Academic Writing, College Composition I with Workshop, College Composition I, or College Composition II. Students who are admitted into the University Honors Program are exempt from taking this test.

    You can take your English placement test online at www.utoledo.edu/dl/englishtests, and you will have up to two hours to complete the English placement test. Please plan accordingly.  Students who have been admitted into the University Honors Program are exempt from taking this test.

     Chemistry - This test is comprised of high school chemistry and mathematical concepts. There are 44 multiple-choice questions and use of a non-programmable calculator is permitted. The chemistry department provides information and a few practice questions on its Web site or visit  http://homepages.utoledo.edu/ajorgen/practicequiz.asp

    Math - All degrees at UT have a mathematics requirement. How a student will fulfill that requirement varies from degree to degree. The degree student plans to pursue, Math ACT (or Math SAT) score, and the score from math placement test(s) will be used by the adviser to determine the mathematics required and at what level student should start. It is important to begin at the appropriate course that will allow the student to proceed through all required mathematics courses in a timely manner without being placed in a course above or below the current ability. The mathematics department provides a set of sample practice tests or for an online Math Placement Practice Exam visit  http://math.utoledo.edu/placement_practice.html

     Scratch paper is allowed on mathematics tests, but calculators are not.

    • Math 0980 - Elementary Algebra placement test required. Contact PSEOP Adviser after taking the placement test.
    • Math 1180 - ACT of 16-36: No placement test required. ACT of 0-15 requires Elementary Algebra or College Algebra placement test. See PSEOP Adviser concerning placement test student should take.
    • Math 1210, 1260, 1320, 1330 - ACT of 20-36: No placement test required. ACT of 0-19 requires Elementary Algebra or College Algebra placement test. See PSEOP Adviser concerning placement test student should take.
    • Math 1750 - ACT of 22-36: No placement test required. ACT of 0-21 requires Elementary Algebra or College Algebra placement test. See PSEOP Adviser concerning placement test student should take.
    • Math 1340 and 1850 - ACT of 27-36: Trigonometry test required. ACT of 20-26 requires a College Algebra AND Trigonometry placement test. Contact PSEOP Adviser after taking the placement test(s).

     Foreign Language - The first level of a foreign language class is the 1110 (example: SPAN 1110, Elementary Spanish I). If a student has taken prior high school course work in the language the student wants to register for, a placement test must be taken. Students will not be permitted to register for classes higher than the 1110 level unless this test has been taken. The test covers grammatical structures, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Tests are offered in these languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish.
