Which placement tests do you need to take?
Visit the myUT Portal at myUT.utoledo.edu and sign in with your UTAD username and password. You will be directed to the “New Student” tab in the myUT Portal.
Why are placement tests important?
Placement tests and ACT (or SAT) scores are used by our departments to place you into the correct english, math, chemistry, and foreign language. Therefore, it is crucial to your academic success at UT that you take the placement tests very seriously. Review the subject(s) in which you need placement tests prior to taking them. Placement tests may only be taken once.
When should you take the placement tests?
You need to take your placement tests one week BEFORE you attend Rocket Launch. We cannot recommend strongly enough the importance of taking placement tests BEFORE you attend Rocket Launch. NO APOINTMENTS ARE NEEDED. Tests are available on a walk-in basis; however, each test lasts approximately 45 minutes.
You can take your English placement test online at www.utoledo.edu/dl/englishtests, and you will have up to two hours to complete the English placement test. Please plan accordingly. Students who have been admitted into the University Honors Program are exempt from taking this test.
Where can you take placement tests?
Placement tests can be taken in the Field House, Room 1080. Placement tests are available Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; and Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. No appointment is needed. Please bring a valid form of picture identification with you (driver's license, passport, or state ID) and your Rocket Number to complete placement testing.
French, German, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish foreign language placement tests can be completed at the Test Center (Field House, Room 1080). Other languages such as Arabic and Chinese must be scheduled through the Foreign Language Department.

Advanced Placement (AP) Credit
English Placement Test
You will be asked to write an essay on a given topic; the writing will be evaluated for content, coherence, development and style. This test is used to place you into Academic Writing, College Composition I with Workshop, or College Composition I. Students who have been admitted into the University Honors Program are exempt from taking this test.

Mathematics Placement Tests
All baccalaureate degrees at UT require at least one mathematics course. The major you plan to pursue, your math ACT or SAT score, and/or the score(s) from your mathematics placement test(s) will be used by your adviser to determine your first mathematics course. UT offers three levels of math placement tests: elementary algebra, college algebra and trigonometry.
Practice for Mathematics Placement Tests
The Mathematics Department provides a set of sample practice placement tests for you at
http://math.utoledo.edu/placement_index.html. It is strongly recommended that you take the sample practice placement test before attempting the placement test. On the mathematics department website, you will find information that describes how your placement test score will be used to assign your math course. Scratch paper is allowed on mathematics tests, but calculators are not. The mathematics department provides information and a few practice questions on its Website at

Foreign Language Placement Test
If you have one or more years of foreign language from high school, take the placement test in that language if you intend to continue it in college. The test covers grammatical structures, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

Chemistry Placement Test
This test is composed of high school chemistry and mathematical concepts. You are strongly urged to review chemistry and math before taking the test so the results will place you at the correct course level. There are 44 multiple-choice questions, and use of a non-programmable calculator is permitted.

The Chemistry Department provides information and a few practice questions on its website at http://www.utoledo.edu/as/chemistry/undergrad/placementtest.html. It is strongly recommended that you answer the practice questions before attempting the placement test.
