Issue Based Communities

Issue Based Communities and a Community Advisory Council are programs designed to strengthen existing, and create new, partnerships between community agencies and the University of Toledo to address issues within Toledo.  Membership in the issue based communities are open to all community agencies working in the Toledo area and to all faculty, staff, and student groups at the University of Toledo. This letter from Office of Service Learning Director was sent as an invitation to community agencies in the Toledo area, and serve as an open invitation and introduction to the project. These discussions will reveal areas for collaboration and oppurtunities for service learning projects.  Each issue community will have a representative on the community advisory council.

The first all-group meeting occured November 5, 2007 and individual groups are in the ongoing process of meeting too. The advisory council first met December 12, 2007; they will provide leadership and facilitate conversation between issue-based groups and projects.

Currently the groups that exist are:  Aging and Seniors, Health and Wellness, Community Development, Science and Technology, Poverty and Homelessness, Disability, Mental Health, Education and Schools, Gender Issues, Domestic Violence and Child Protection. The purpose of these groups is to bring together the right people, interested in the same issues, to discuss collaborative projects and further the university's involvement with the community.

On this webpage you will find schedules for upcoming issue based or advisory council meetings, notes from previous discussions, agency memberships, and other related documents. If you have any questions or would like to have your name and information added to our contact list please email us at servicelearning@utoledo.edu or call 419-530-2213.
