    Alternative College Credit

    Portfolio Development Program

The Portfolio Program is a tool for accelerating degree progress by documenting and assessing prior college-level learning gained in a variety of work, volunteer, and learning experiences. An adviser works closely with each student to determine potential for portfolio development to apply toward requirements of courses in the student's program of study. There is also an optional Portfolio Development course available to guide and support students in developing an effective portfolio. The student receives a 50% discount on tuition for courses approved for credit through the Portfolio Program. There is also a one time $100 assessment fee.

Credit may be earned for certain courses in which a student has had previous learning or practical experience. Credit is obtained via portfolio, which involves compiling a portfolio detailing the student’s prior college level learning. Portfolio credit is available to University College Degree Program students, and that credit may reflect course work from other baccalaureate-granting colleges within The University of Toledo.

Students desiring credit by this process should contact the University College portfolio coordinator Dr. Cynthia Spitler at 419.530.1250 or at cynthia.spitler@utoledo.edu

    College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

A student may earn college credit by taking the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests at the University Test Center, Scott Park location, Room AS 1200. If college credit has not been earned in the area in which credit is sought and the student is not currently enrolled in a course in that area. Students should consult the college in which they are enrolled to determine the specific credit limitations. Students should take the CLEP examinations before entrance or transfer. Although it is recommended that these exams be taken prior to enrolling in classes at The University of Toledo, students may, with adviser’s permission, take the exam within the first semester of study.

University College also recognizes DANTES and ACE evaluated academic credit.

For information to learn more about CLEP testing and its benefits and eligibility contact an adviser in Student Services at 419.530.3142.

For information regarding CLEP tests and scheduling contact the UT Test Center at 419.530.3266.

    Credit By Examination

These examinations are conducted by the instructor(s) of courses in which credit is desired. An examination may be sought for many of the courses offered by the college. The student is responsible for making arrangements for examination with the instructor. Application forms are available in the Office of the Registrar.
