Online Human Donation Science Master's Degree Overview

Study human donation science at The University of Toledo — the first master’s program in the field of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in the U.S. 

UToledo offers a 100% online program, as well as a traditional master’s program on campus.

The online program is designed for individuals already working in the field with an organ procurement organization (OPO), transplant program or tissue and eye bank. Online students may enroll full time or part time and begin any semester. 

UToledo’s professional science master’s degree is a blend of course work in science and medicine with classes in professional business skills. Graduate students take courses in such areas as business, human resources, communications and law. You will be prepared for a leadership role as an organ procurement coordinator in your institution. 

Online Human Donation Science Master's Degree Highlights

UT Online. UToledo offers full support to our distance learners. We want you to succeed. 

Hands-on clinical work. UToledo distance learners in the master’s program complete the required clinical experiences at the OPO, transplant center or tissue bank with which they are affiliated.  

Online community. Every online class in the human donation science master’s program features a discussion board. Distance learners communicate with each other and foster a sense of community. 

Network. UToledo has an active alumni network.  


Career Opportunities

UToledo’s job placement rate is almost 100% for graduates of our P.S.M. program in human donation science. Donation coordinators earn an average starting salary of $65,000 per year. 

80% of our graduates during the past 15 years continue to work in the organ procurement and transplantation field, and 25% of them are now in management and leadership roles. 

UToledo graduates are prepared to take national certification examinations offered by the American Board for Transplant Certification after working in the field for a year.

Professional Licensure Information

Online Human Donation Science Master's Degree Plan of Study

Online students in the master’s program in human donation science take three blocks of courses in science, medical science and professional development. Other courses cover the legal, ethical, sociocultural and behavioral dimensions associated with death, organ and tissue donation, and transplantation. 

Online graduate students in the program complete a full-semester internship at the OPO with which they are affiliated. The capstone experience requires each student to give an online presentation of two case studies from their internships to their fellow students.

Research Opportunities

You will learn from some of the finest faculty members in the field:  

  • UToledo scientists and clinical faculty from The University of Toledo Medical Center. Your faculty advisor will work with you on your scholarly project. 
  • Leaders in the organ and tissue donation and transplantation field. They guest lecture, conduct workshops and supervise clinical experiences. All lectures are recorded for distance learners. 

All students complete a scholarly project. Past students have researched face transplantation and the transportation of organs.
