TOLEDO WIND ORCHESTRA

Toledo Wind Orchestra
2016 Season

The Toledo Wind Orchestra begins its season next Sunday, February 21.  I am VERY excited about this season for a number of reasons.  Our Board has outlined a progressive format for the function and direction of the ensemble, and – based on the musical achievements of last season – there is so much potential to perform some exciting and challenging repertoire.

What’s New

  • Rehearsal Time – Due to scheduling complications with our building, our rehearsals will most likely run 5:00-7:00pm on Sundays.  Call time for our first rehearsal – Feb. 21 – is 4:30pm.  We will discuss the 5:00 start time at that first rehearsal.
  • Participation Fee – To be able to bring in guest artists, advertise events, and offset cost of music, there will be a $40 participation fee.  Checks can be made out to UT Music and will be collected at the first rehearsal.
  • Attendance – To achieve the artistry for which this ensemble will strive, we need full participation at all rehearsals.  At this time, there is no defined attendance policy.  Your participation should be considered a personal commitment to the ensemble.
  • Concerts – Our general schedule is three rehearsals, concert, one week off.  If you know you will be unable to attend two or more rehearsals prior to a concert, then your participation in that concert is forfeit.  There are no refunds in this scenario.  I suspect that there will be unavoidable instances where committed individuals may have to sit out a concert.  This is not a problem, nor should it prevent a potential ensemble member from participating in the other concerts.
  • Concert Venues – Our first performance will be at Doermann Theater.  However, the Board has discussed the possibility of performing in alternative venues.  Future concert sites will be announced.

Repertoire

Concert 1 – March 20
With the uncertainty of personnel with our first meeting, I believe it best to stick to repertoire that is considered “core” and can be performed well with limited instrumentation.  To this end:

    • Gustav Holst – Suite in Eb and Bach’s Fugue a la Gigue
    • Vittorio Giannini – Symphony No. 3
    • Jack Stamp – Aubrey Fanfare
    • Percy Grainger – TBD
    • March – TBD
    • Lighter rep to taste – TBD

Later Concerts
Here, we begin engaging guest artists, programming repertoire that is both new and established, and making programs thematic.  Under consideration is a concert of Gershwin and Gershwin-inspired repertoire: Cuban Overture, Prelude No. 2 for Piano (guest artist) paired with Donald Grantham’s Fantasy Variations on Gershwin’s Second Prelude, and various other accompanying works.  There is also the potential for the inclusion of chamber repertoire this season.
