MHLT - 1110 FUNDAMENTALS OF HUMAN MENTAL HEALTH
[4 hours] An introduction to the field of human services, especially mental health,
history and current trends in treatment and prevention of disease and the basic skills common to the field. Students will learn skills at the
demonstrable level as they will later be used in the field. Prerequisite: Admission to the program Corequisite: PSY 1010
MHLT - 1210 MENTAL HEALTH SKILLS
[4 hours] This course is designed to enable students to master the therapeutic interpersonal skills
required of mental health professionals. Successful completion of this course is a requirement for continuation into advanced courses.

MHLT - 1220 THEORIES IN MENTAL HEALTH
[3 hours] An overview of current approaches of psychological theory. This course includes an
examination of the basic issues in mental health, including ethical issues and personal implications for the mental health professional.
Prerequisite: MHLT 1110; PSY 1010
MHLT - 1230 PATHOLOGY IN MENTAL HEALTH
[3 hours] This course deals with an introduction to the concepts of abnormal psychology with
emphasis on understanding the cultural and historical bases for defining abnormality as well as modern classification systems, the biological
model, treatment modalities, and theoretical perspectives. Prerequisite: PSY 1010
MHLT - 1240 SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES IN MENTAL HEALTH
[3 hours] An overview and survey of addictive disorders, use and abuse, and the
personal and cultural effects of chemical dependency. Prerequisite: MHLT 1110; PSY 1010
MHLT - 2110 MENTAL HEALTH FALL PRACTICUM
[4 hours] Students are placed in community agencies relevant to mental health and work in a
role related to the function of a mental health technician under the guidance of a supervisor. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing; All 1st year
major courses; Permission & placement during prior spring
MHLT - 2120 GROUP AND THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES
[4 hours] A study of various types of groups and activities skills used in mental health
environments both inpatient and community based. Focus on design, principles, procedures and applications of various techniques. Prerequisite:
PSY 1010
MHLT - 2130 ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION IN MENTAL HEALTH
[4 hours] The various techniques and requirements of assessment and
interventions used in the most important mental health environments will be explored and practiced. Special emphasis is placed on interview
assessment and crisis intervention; implications for record keeping in the variety of settings is also looked at. Prerequisite: PSY 1010;

MHLT - 2140 SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING
[3 hours] An evaluation of prevention programs and community resources
available in the prevention and treatment of substance abuse. Prerequisite: MHLT 1110, 1240
MHLT - 2150 MODELS OF TREATMENT FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE
[3 hours] A review of the various components of substance abuse and philosophies of
treatment. Theories of etiology and maintenance are also addressed. Prerequisite: MHLT 1110, 1240
MHLT - 2210 MENTAL HEALTH SPRING PRACTICUM
[4 hours] This course is a continuation of MHLT 2110. Students continue where placed in
community agencies relevant to mental health and work in a role related to the function of a mental health technician under the guidance of a
supervisor. Prerequisite: All 1st year major courses; Permission and placement during prior Fall; MHLT 2110
MHLT - 2220 FAMILY THEORIES AND CULTURAL INFLUENCES IN MENTAL HEALTH
[3 hours] Study of basic family systems and structures and the
influences of cultural patterns as they interact and impact the mental health and therapeutic needs of individual family members. Prerequisite:
PSY 1010; SOSC 1400; Second yr standing in major
MHLT - 2240 SUB ABUSE TREATMENT TECHNIQUES
[3 hours] An examination of ethical and legal issues in substance abuse, as well as
examination of the specific skills needed by workers in substance abuse programs. Prerequisite: MHLT 1110, 1240; Second year standing in major.
MHLT - 2310 PRACTICUM FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE
[4 hours] Students placed in community agencies working in area of substance abuse treatment.
Prerequisite: All 1st year requirements; Arrangements made during prior Fall.
MHLT - 2990 INDEPENDENT STUDY
[1 - 3 hours] A course designed to provide educational opportunities in a specialized academic area under
the direct supervision of a faculty member.
