Proactive Protection: Intellectual Property and Patentable Technology

Sponsored by the College of Graduate Studies and Technology Transfer

When it comes to producing important work that is proprietary in nature and requires protection, the researcher needs to be proactive in protecting not only his/her interests, but the University's as well. Prior disclosures can occur during presentations, defenses, and even the posting of titles or abstracts, especially if it is outside the University of Toledo!

The University is committed to becoming a national leader in technology transfer, and the College of Graduate Studies is committed to adhering to best practices as well as being a national leader in the field of Electronic Thesis & Dissertations (ETDs) with regard to their publication and dissemination.

This workshop will cover the best approach to protecting your discoveries and ongoing work. Mark Fox of Technology Transfer will address the "big picture" and provide a context in which to consider the protection of research being conducted, and how to prevent inadvertent public disclosures. Teri Green of COGS will address how updates in procedures and forms will assist the researcher in timely compliance and effective protection, including when a publication delay is warranted. The College of Graduate studies has been working with the Technology Transfer office to revise forms and deadlines to better meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff.

This workshop should be taken as early as possible in the research process, and is not only for graduate students. Faculty supervising such research areas are strongly encouraged to attend as well.
