Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards for Prospective Graduate Students

Acceptance of any of the below Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards could affect other financial aid or student loans. You are strongly encouraged to contact the Office of Financial Aid to inform them of acceptance of any of these awards.

Asterisk * designates COGS 2015 Annual Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards

University Fellowships *

For entering Ph.D. students or those in the first year of their Ph.D. program who have exceptional academic records. It is the highest student award the College of Graduate Studies makes and provides a stipend for the academic year at the doctoral student level as defined by each departmental program, plus remission of instructional fees, out-of-state surcharge, general and other student fees. May be renewed for up to three years for a total of four years of support provided the student maintains an outstanding academic record and makes significant progress toward the degree. Application for 2015 will be available mid-Fall 2014 with an anticipated due date of mid-February 2015.

Richard L Bostleman Memorial Scholarship (1 award) *

Presented to a graduate student who has successfully completed an undergraduate degree and participated for at least two years in NCAA level intercollegiate athletics at UT. Renewable provided the recipient is making satisfactory progress toward the degree (two years at master’s level, three years at the doctoral level).  The amount may vary depending upon available funds. Application availability will be determined on continuation of this scholarship by the current recipient.  If the scholarship becomes available for 2015-2016, the application would be available mid-Fall 2014 with an anticipated due date of mid-February 2015.

Graduate Opportunity Assistantship Award (GOAP) *

The Graduate Opportunity Assistantship Program (GOAP) seeks to ensure that adequate funding opportunities exist for all students, and specifically those who have overcome significant educational and personal challenges to pursue higher education but possess the skill, leadership and ability to make a significant impact in their chosen field. This scholarship seeks to ensure that students traditionally under-represented nationally in graduate education have access to assistance to encourage their participation. McNair Scholars Award *

The McNair Scholars program at the University of Toledo offers two opportunities for students who participated in an undergraduate Ronald E. McNair Baccalaureate Achievement program. Michigan Initiative Award

This award is available to graduate students who are regularly admitted to a degree program (excluding EMBA, Law, Doctor of Pharmacy, M.D. program, MSBS-Medical Sciences program, and Physician Assistant  program) entering any semester from the following Michigan counties:  Hillsdale, Lenawee, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne. The award is available for those courses listed on the student's current Graduate Plan of Study, which is required to be submitted to COGS after the first semester of attendance. This award is not stackable with any other scholarship, award, or GA/TA award.

  • Award:  Covers Graduate out-of-state tuition surcharge, up to a maximum of 12 credit hours for the MBA program or 12-15 credit hours for all other programs, except those stated above. Tuition refers to graduate level courses only and cannot be applied to any undergraduate courses, audited courses, or repeated courses. Students receiving the Michigan Initiative Award must maintain a 3.0 GPA during their graduate studies to continue receiving the award in future semesters.
  • Minimum Requirements: Available to students whose permanent address is within one of the counties in Michigan which include:  Hillsdale, Lenawee, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne.
  • Renewal Criteria: Academically eligible students are automatically renewed for this award until completion of a graduate degree.
  • Please note that if you are a Monroe County Michigan resident, you may be eligible for an exemption of the out of state tuition surcharge fees.

Sister Cities Award

This award is available to students entering any semester, effective fall 2005, and does not require an application, however, student must fill out a Terms and Conditions form before the award will be placed on their account.The award is available for those courses listed on the students' current Graduate Plan of Study, which is required to be submitted to COGS after the first semester of attendance. This award is not stackable with any other scholarship, award, or GA/TA award.

  • Award: Covers Graduate out-of-state tuition surcharge, up to a maximum of 12 credit hours for the MBA program or 12-15 credit hours for all other programs, except those stated above. Tuition refers to graduate level courses only and cannot be applied to any undergraduate courses, audited courses, or repeated courses.
  • Minimum Requirements: Available to students whose permanent address is within one of the Toledo Sister Cities/Regions, including:

    • Qinhuangdao, China
    • Szeged, Hungary

    • Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
    • Delmenhorst, Germany
    • Toyohashi, Japan
    • Tanga, Tanzania
    • Poznan, Poland
    • Hyderabad, Pakistan
    • Coimbatore, India
  • Renewal Criteria: Academically eligible students* can renew this award for 15 consecutive semesters over a maximum of five years, or until completion of a graduate degree, whichever comes first, as long as the student maintains full-time enrollment each academic year.
